RIFF?

In the lossless comparisons FLAC is said not to support RIFF chunks

what are RIFF chunks?
do they affect sound?
do i need them in my files?

The short answer is that if you don't know what they are, you almost certainly don't have to worry about them, and they do not affect the sound.
