Mpc!!!!!

WOW I just encoded my first MPC file. Well I didn't even knew it already was encoded. It took 5 seconds or something on a p4 2.0 northwood. and the quality is really good!

many people say that mpc has no future. why ?
its the best codec in the world at higher bitrates

why OGG and not mpc ?

1. No hardware support... (Which both MP3 and AAC has... Vorbis seems to be on the way...)
2. Pretty much %100 closed... (Hell even the docs for AAC can be downloaded if you like to read them...)
3. Multiplatform support isn't that great... (MP3 can be run on anything from older Amigas to smaller servers running Solaris...)
4. Small user base...
5. Most people can't hear the difference between pure CD-Audio and a 128 kbit Xing MP3 rip, which explains why there's such a small user base... (Since they do not hear any problems with inferior technologies/formats they have no reason to change...)
6. Psychological factors matters too which makes some people "diss" the format for another... (Like I have done... I only use AAC these days... )
7. Oh I almost forgot... People want small files with good sound... Both MP3 and Vorbis allows much higher quality audio at lower bitrates... Have you ever heard ~96 kbit Vorbis? I can assure you that most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a Vorbis encode at that bitrate with an MPC encode using --insane , even if it's an sample that Vorbis has problems encoding... MPC simply requires higher bitrates for achieving good quality, which some people just aren't "accepting"...

thats true

at my school/friends for most people mp3s are mp3s. they don't even know that there are things like bitrates... lol

they just heard that mp3 is good and cool. so mp3 is mp3

and of course they don't hear ANY difference. thats what makes me go crazy often... My daddy has his own studio we are all musicians in my family... so I probably hace a better "traning" and experience in listening to music but anyway I don't understand why people don't hear the difference to 128 xing shit

Ubiquity plays a large role in exposure to anything, be it a codec, a band, or what have you. I have yet to hear of anybody else in real life speaking of MPC, AAC, FLAC or even Ogg Vorbis. MP3 was not the first and certainly not the best encoding scheme, but it was the one that for whatever reason caught the public's eye, and for the most part, it keeps them happy (example: "wow, this illegal 128kbps Xing copy of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" that I downloaded off of Morpheus sounds great!!"). The only other format to encorach on MP3's reign is WMA, due again to the ubiquity of the Windows operating system and Micro$oft's aggressive attempts to get thier codec implanted in new devices. Thus, the use of AAC, Ogg and MPC will likely be limited to those informed of such developments (audiophiles, computer geeks, etc), at least for the time being.

I'll stick with MPC personally, regardless of hardware support, etc. Ogg Vorbis is a more promising candidate for hardware support anyway, considering it that it generally performs as well, if not better than, MP3, AAC, and WMA at low (<128kbps) bitrates, and most people are more concerned with the quantity of music on a portable device over the quality (though a compromise of low bitrate/high quality would make many people happier).
