LAME.EXE 3.93.1 why does it make connection?

Hi,
I'm running lame.exe 3.93.1 as an external encoder to EAC 0.9 beta 4 and Monkey's Audio 3.97 under Windows 98SE.

I run Norton Internet Security Professional 2002.

My connection log tells me that when I ran Monkey's Audio using LAME as an external encoder (experimenting with -v -V 0 -q 0 -ms -b 192) while I had an internet connection active through dial-up to my ISP, LAME.EXE tried to send an outgoing packet.

Now I don't claim to be an expert, but it there some other explanation than LAME acting like some form of spyware?

My firewall log says:"An instance of c:\program files\monkey's audio\external\lame.exe is preparing to access the internet for the first time", with the associated time/date of the event.
A packet was received from the port the original packet seemed to go to.

Could this be something like lame.exe talking to itself or could there be something more sinister.

My machine had a full system sweep with up to date Norton AV immediately before the encoding session which was the first time I have tried using Lame 3.93.1.

No other unexpected behaviour was observed.

(PS lets not get sidetracked into my choice of parameters. I'm only experimenting).

Thanks.
Lena

Lame isn't actually doing anything, don't worry about it.

I run Sygate Pro as a firewall and often (usually when my dial-up connection gets dropped and automatically reconnects) whatever one program of the many that is currently running, my firewall pops up about a connection from this program.

It's not really the program making a connection, and I can't answer exactly why this happens, but it's not something to worry about.

Thank you! I'm probably getting a bit paranoid about spyware since I started using spybot.....

I love that poster

The nice thing about open sourced programs is that we KNOW there is nothing malicious in there.

(well, unless Dibrom did something tricky to the binaries without telling anyone  )

Ooops. I really wouldn't be so sure.

I could go great lenghts to explain why, but Mr. Ken Thompson surely did it better than I ever could.

Obs: For the youngsters out there: Ken Thompson is nothing less than one of the creators of Unix. His peers Dennis Ritchie and Brian Kernighan also created the C programming language. True heros.
