When burning MP3's on a cd when you change id3 tag names thru tag and rename does it effect how they are read in the mp3 player as far as cd text goes ?

Giving each MP3 cd that you burn a different name. Makeing sure that there is a difference in the first 8 characters of the name, since that is all that is stored in the 'normal' part of the ISO9660 file system.

Shouldn't the MP3 player read each cd's id3 tags and not keep the id3 tags from one cd in memory?

I'm not sure I follow what you're asking but I'll give it a shot;

ID3 tags and CD-Text are seperate items, changing one should not affect the other in any way. CD-Text is usually put on full albums to indicate Artist/album, or when you burn your own music ie JJ's/Summer mix 2003. If you burn the tracks as mp3s then the id3 tags will be with each track and seperate from the CD-Text which is written when you burn the CD where the ID3s are added before.

I don't understand why you think the first 8 characters must be different since unless you are using the CD on a DOS computer, most modern computer systems handle the Joliet CD standard which supports up to 64 characters (I think -if I'm wrong on the number someone please correct me), but anyhow its a lot more than 8 characters. The original ISO9660 is usually only used in data CDs to provide the most compatible naming structure between different platforms, the joliet standard is also iso9660 but an extention (for long filenames). Maybe your MP3 player only reads 8 character naming schemes? i find it hard to believe - you'll have to be a bit more specific on this one.

the mp3 player should read the id3 tags of each of the TRACKS on the cd, ID3 are embedded in the actual music tracks and are not applied to CDs. Your player might retain the id3 tags of the CD even if you remove it, but once you put a new CD in, the player should read the new tracks and should display the new id3 tags.

Hope this helps

Thank you for your response TwoJ - finally someone who seems to understand....

I understand that Id3 tags and CD Text are different. I have mastered ID3 tags both v1 and v2.  Using Tag and Rename 2.0.5 I have been able to correct my ID3 tags perfectly by mass copying the file name info into the tag info.

I have researched CD Text enough to know that my CD Burner supports CD Text ( Its a BTC CDWriter IDE1610) and that my Head Unit supports CD Text also (Its a Sony MP-70).  My problem is that I don't know how to burn CD Text so that the Sony will read it. I read that I could place CD Text in the R-W sub codes in the program area using the ITTS format and the capacity there would be roughly 31 Mb which shoud be more that enough to hold text information for 142 MP3s. What I need to know is how do burn CD Text (heard I could do it with Nero and Feurio) and do I need to remove the tag info from my MP3s to make it all work?

Above and beyond all this, your final comment sums it up - "Once you put a new MP3 CD in, the player should read the new tracks and should display the new ID3 tags" --- but it doesn't. My Sony MP-70 continues to show the tags from the first MP3 CD that was put in even though I take out and put back in other MP3 CDs numerous times. Has anyone else had this problem and does anyone think that burning an MP3 CD with CD Text could possibly solve this problem? Or is this a flaw in Sony's design never to be fixed only to be worked around by hitting the reset button every stupid time........

CDTEXT can only be used in Audio CDs not in MP3 discs.

/\/ephaestous is fairly correct that CD-Text is suppose to be for Audio CDs only and not with mp3s. You can actually fool some MP3 players that accept CD-TEXT by burning a mixed-mode (Audio/data) CD that has a short - silent audio (CDA) track at the beginning so that the lead-in will have the CD-Text info, and then in the data section you burn the mp3s. The players usually will read the CD-Text and then the short audio track and then automatically switch to the mp3 mode for those tracks.

I use Nero (not nero express) which if you burn an Audio, Mixed-Mode, or CD-Extra you will find a tab called 'Audio CD' which is where you can add the CD-Text information. This tab will not show up if you use any other format such as ISO9660 (data). As stated before CD-TEXT are completly seperate things from ID3 tags hense they are not affected by each other.

I'm curious why you want to add CD-Text when you are burning mp3s since any information you could put into the CD-TEXT section can be put into the ID3s tags. Also as i said this mixed-mode works on "some" mp3 players, not all. I don't know about yours - i guess you can try burning a CD and see if it works. Usually most CD players with CD-TEXT are just getting the Artist-Album information which is also usually recorded in the ID3 tags so I'm can't see why you would go through the extra trouble of writing in CD-TEXT information and burning in a kind of non-standard mode just to have the same info that should be in the ID3 tracks?

As for your Sony MP-70, i'm not familiar with that model so I'm afraid I can't provide much help on that, i guess what I would try is;
- Put in your mp3 CD let it read the tracks - then take out the mp3 CD and put in a normal audio CD (not mp3) and hopefully the ID3 tracks should go away.
- One thought is that some players have trouble with ID3v2 tags, you could try removing the ID3v2 (keep the ID3v1 tags) tags and burn 2 or 3 CDs that way and then see if it works with those.
- I don't know if the MP-70 supports having its firmware updated - you might want to check that.
- If possible try to find another mp3 player and test if it is doing it on that one.

If it is still doing it after all that then get in touch with their customer support and find out whats up - it sounds like it might be a malfunction at that point.

best of luck

I have a Sony MP40 mp3 head unit and I use both the Tag info and CD Text.  With the Sony players and most good systems, if you play a data CD containing mp3 files that contain ID3v1 tag information, the tag information can be displayed for each track.  However, you can also name the CD that you create, and the Sony player will display the name of the CD that you created, if you created one.  This is nothing to do with CD Text or Tag information.  It is just a capability to display the name of a CD whether it contains mp3's or audio tracks or audio tracks with CD Text.

You can use Nero to burn audio discs with CD Text if your recorder supports this, and you can also use Nero to name your CD using "Compilation Info" - "Label".
