I also have the iRiver SlimX MP3 / CD player and use the very same LAME encoding settings (--alt-preset standard). What I've noticed, however, is that the SlimX makes an occasional "pop" or "click" noise in the middle of random tracks, even when they've been (securely) ripped and encoded.

I use high quality CD-RW's (Sony / Verbatim) almost exclusively for recording my MP3's. I e-mailed iRiver suggesting that their player may have a problem reading CD-RW's correctly, but I'm now starting to think that it may actually be a problem reading VBR MP3's. I haven't tried any VBR MP3's on CD-R yet, so I can't say for sure if it really is just a media problem...

No argument here, but I think the all pervasive Windows Media Player has done more to give VBR MP3s a bad name than anything else.  Frankly, I was just trying to embarass Microsoft.  Most freeware does a better job than their highly evolved player.

Just for the record, I use --alt-preset standard with my riovolt 250 (iriver converted) and works great with vbr. Sounds incredible.

Hi all.

Seems like a few Riovolt users might be following this thread so I thought I'd have a rant here;

I guess quite a few people have mailed Sonicblue/Iriver regarding the future compatability with other formats of the Sp100 et al. Has anyone ever recieved a response? I have enquired numerous times regarding musepack, ogg etc and have never even recieved an acknowledgement. That's fine but what really bugs me is that they CONTINUE TO SELL THESE PRODUCTS ON THE BACK OF THE 'ability to support upcoming formats' LINE! It's what suckered me and no doubt a few others. That statement is in my opinion pretty vague and deliberately so. If they can't deliver,  they should drop the promotion of  this feature, but they should deliver if they hold any value in their customer base. If there is a technological reason why they can't support other formats it's high time they admited that they f#?@ed up. Failing that, it's about time we had what we've been waiting for.

So I  urge you to drop sonicblue/iriver a mail and remind them of the above. If we all do it we might just get our moneys worth!

Rant Over

Do someone have a  email address that can hear this petition?. Any ways I will drop an email to sonicblue/irriver. Count on me.  I had to convert my riovolt250 to irriver to have a hope of future upgrades, since this guys at sonicblue dont give a f* what customers need. Thanks and have a great day.

I posted the reply I received from iriver <which I got reather timely)- it stated approximately that they would have a more concrete schedule by the end of april with regards to ogg vorbis support on the iriver slimx.  Currently they are working on making the vorbis codec more "versatile" or whatever that means...

According to irriver, the riovolt250/sp-250 have 8mb to store the firmwares(decoders). I am guessing here, but maybe extra decoders doesnt fit in those 8mb. If that is the case would it be a good idea to let the customer choose the decoder?. How?, Just posting in their sites differents firmwares updates with diferents decoders. Personally I dont use ogg but I would like to see differents firmwares with ogg, mpc, aac, mp3, mp3pro, ape etc. All are very good. The world deserve freedom. In gold (I mean in god) we trust!.

TURBO said he converted from Riovolt to iRiver:

Hi!
I own a Riovolt sp-250 and you mentioned you converted to iriver...
Does it mean you used iriver firmware on Riovolt?
or just you returned your Riovolt and bought an Iriver model?

If you look for "Riovolt firmware" in google.com  you see:

MacUpdate: RioVolt SP-250 Firmware 2.0
link: www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/7198

while this 2.0 doesn't exist on the sonicblue web.
I dont have a MAC..so I dont know if I could use it....
I dont understand why there are different kind of firmware
for MAC or PC when you just use the firmware from the burned CD on the Riovolt .

Could you help me?
thanks.
