Yes, Another Headphone Post...

Hello everybody!  First of I'd like to apologise for posting another topic about headphones but I read through all the other ones and none seemed to answer my questions.  I'm looking to purchase a set of headphones for about £100.  I don't really care about style, name or size, I just want the best sound I can get for my money, and ones that won't kill my ears after 30 min.  For the most part of their life they will be plugged into a Sony TA-FE 330R amp. [I can probably get you the specs if that'll help].  However they may also be used for professional studio monitoring soon.  Also, richer sounds.com has some good prices for headphones but I don't know if any are worth while.

Thanks for your time.

Sony V6 or Denon AHD-950. These are both good sounding closed-back headphones (which you would want for studio monitors).  The Sony V6 (also come in a version with a gold plug, called the Sony 7506 which are quite a bit more expensive) have been around since the mid 80s and are a tried and true fantastic headphone. Some people think the Denon's have a nicer sound, but they are more expensive. My advice to you when it comes to headphones: audition them, preferably all the ones you are considering at the same time. Do not look at specs, they don't mean a damn thing when it comes to sound quality. Stay away from Sony V600s, and all their other current models in that price range.

Do some searches on headwize.com or head-fi.org, these guys are headphone experts.

If you plan to use them for monitoring, getting closed headphones would be a good idea. Look into Sennheiser HD280Pro, Sony MDR-V6/7506 and the closed circumaural AKG models. Audition. Don't believe in everything you see on head-fi.

For under £100 i doubt you will find better than the Sennheiser 580s.  They are excellent.

I got mine from http://www.petertyson.co.uk/ for £95 delivered.

for closed headphones i can recommend the MB Quart QP805.
i can't remember what i paid, but if you get them for under £100, they should be fine.

(EDIT: just had a look - they should be ~(euro)100 - so < £100 should be no prob)

afaik the HD580 are open, are they not?

bye,

You have to hear them to truly understand, but I will say that those who are familiar with good headphones are almost unanimous in the opinion that the v600s are not the best in either quality or value for your buck.  In fact the entire v-series is in question with the exception of a select few, such as the v6 and v7506.  I second atherean on the Sennheiser HD280Pro; it is both good in quality and value.
