Microsoft bashing split

Very interesting, expecially 'cause I definetly switched to WinXP 64 last month.

Suggestion/request: why don't RareWares officially delivers x64 compiles (not only for oggenc) on its pages ?

Probably because the gains are that great, and I already provide a large number of variants.  However, it seems to me, and where relevant, it might be worth now offering some 64 bit compiles and I'll probably drop the P3 compiles - Generic and P4 32 bit should suffice, these days, I would have thought. I'm just about to go on vacation so nothing will happen for the next couple of weeks, or so, but I'll look at it when I return. I have two systems running XP Pro 32 bit and three running XP x64 Pro, so testing isn't a problem. I do variously load Vista/Windows 7 on other systems but I hate Vista with a vengeance and, sad to say, despite the hype, I'm not convinced that Windows 7 is all that much better.

I had the same initial reaction to vista, BUT after I gave/traded my free copy of vista off to a buddy I got ahold of a free copy of server 2008 and I can tell you this, Once you tweak it to work more like XP its a damn dream to work with, a few MINOR quirks but nothing you dont get use to in a couple weeks of use.

Vista's default settings/layout are HORRIBLE and drive me crazy, but I can say with some confidence if you try 2008 sp2 out and tweak it like they show here
http://www.win2008workstation.com/
you will endup liking it and being less hatefull of vista.

win7 pisses me off(hate the new start menu and all the stuff you CANT disable)

I couldnt go back to XP x64/server 2003 after using 2k8 for so long, it honestly is just faster and more responsive.

2 other things any vista/xp user may want to look at to make the use of their system more conveniant are

Fences
http://www.stardock.com/products/fences/
this lets you "fence" your desktop making areas(fences) for diffrent types of icons and files, it can also hide all desktop content with a simple dbl click!!!

and "vista start menu"(works on non-vista os's as well and is alot better then stock menu in windows)
http://www.vistastartmenu.com/index.html
just check it out, its well worth the download, I have come to rely on these little apps on 2k-server 2008

Oh, I did all the tweaks and it did have most of the 'look and feel' of XP, but there were still fundamental parts that annoyed me. And, yes, that was what pissed me off most about Windows 7. It also seems to want to 'nanny' you all the time without being properly able to switch all the crap off. I know how I want to use the system and the security that I need and I don't need some twat at M$ to tell me I should do it some other way! I'm sure it's great for noobs but you have to be able to switch it all off relatively easily. [rant over]

Exactly the same here.

yeah, also the fact that with 7 you CANT use your own codecs with it if MS has its own codec installed to support that format, you can hack the reg and delete files but thats not a real solution IMHO since it forces you to do stuff 99% of computer users couldnt do themselves.

One thing I like about 2k8 is how easy it is to fully disable stuff like UAC and Driver signing(even on x64) as long as you know what your doing.

there are some things you just cant change back to the old look/feel, but you get use to the new ones, even if you still dont like the change(like display properties being noobiefied)

One thing that makes me not want to mess with 7 again is the fact you CANT choose to set it to "Classic startmenu" so you are FORCED to use the new "better" start menu, as a sysadmin type I like to "keep it simple" and to do that im forced to use 3rd party apps (part of why i tried vista start menu)

I also hate that vista has effectivly every service enabled by default, makes optimizing it far more work then it needs to be, Win7's major contribution is that its service manager can enable/disable services on the fly as needed so they arent all running all the time.

Little OT:

Uncle Bill leaved MS before Vista... there's - as always - a reason !

It's time for us to seek for alternatives such as ReactOS or, better for us (audiphiles), the imminent HaikuOS...

End OT
