Foobar Visual Enhancements/Customization help

Ok..

So from the research ive gathered, it appears that all the really cool foobar templates wont work with the current version?

for example these http://customize.org/foobar

I want a way to display the lyrics, album art, etc.. just something visually pleasing and streamlined.. if there is a way to do this with the current version, let me know or point me to tutorials??

Also.. how does the Lyrics thing work, and how about requirements for getting the info automatically from freedb , etc?

I want my player to look cool, please help!

the reason I recall it not working.. was that one of the components that is required isnt compatible with most recent release?

Guess it depends on your definition of cool.

From your description of what you want, it seems quite possible.

I will give you a suggestion.

This forum is a bundle of information - offered by people willing to help. However, said help comes much more readily if you actual show you are willing to dig in and start to learn.

If you prefer to copy someone's configuration, then I would suggest to ask that person for help or post in a specific configuration thread.

good luck

terry

Because someone's got to be That Guy who actually answers questions instead of pointing pointedly at the search portion of the forum (and because I have never felt that RUMMAGE AROUND IN THE FORUM YOURSELF FOR YOUR ANSWERS, FOOL is an appropriate answer for someone seeking information):

Yes, I imagine that a lot of those configurations require Panels UI (henceforth referred to as The Forbidden UI), a user interface (or UI) that is no longer being developed, is not all that stable in its current state, is not easy to use or develop for, and whose very existence is, at best, controversial among the Powers That Be around here (hence the above-referenced post about how topics centered on it will be locked without warning). Also, it is technically incompatible with versions of Foobar200 more recent than 9.5.2 (though the dirty little secret is that only a couple of functions were disabled, and that The Forbidden UI works about as well as it ever did; it is left as an exercise for the reader how well that was). There are probably many interesting tales to tell about the rise and fall of The Forbidden UI, but none of that exactly helps you get your custom layout with the lyrics and the album art and such today, now does it?

You have basically two options at this point. Or, more accurately, two large categories of options. The first, if you don't particularly care that much about what it looks like and just want function (which I don't think is you, but it still bears mentioning), is the Default User Interface. It does album art, it does (with an optional element) lyrics, it does a lot of nifty stuff, but the disadvantage is that it doesn't allow as much in the way of customization. The advantage here is, well, that it doesn't allow as much in the way of customization. So it's (comparatively) easy to set up and figure out.

The other option, or big bag full of options, is Columns UI. You can do a lot with it, and people have. Depending on exactly what you want to accomplish, setting up can be the work of minutes, or a major undertaking that requires, frankly, a lot of rummaging around on the forum and within the Hydrogenaudio Foobar2000 wiki. I don't believe there are any particularly up-to-date tutorials on how to set things up in Columns UI, though I could be completely wrong.

There are several lyrics panels and add-ons for Columns UI, and a couple of album art ones (as well as Columns' built-in album art support). There is also, if you're feeling particularly adventurous, the Panel Stack Splitter component which, combined with the EL Playlist component, will do darn near everything that The Forbidden UI used to do (while slightly easier to set up, though matters are complicated by the only English documentation available for either of these components consisting of automated translations from, I think, Japanese).

If you want to delve into Columns UI, be advised that it will not be a minor undertaking. Even setting up someone else's config can be a little involved. It can, however, be rather rewarding, particularly if you find tinkering with things to be fun.

Doc BEard, thanks.

1st poster, thanks

to the second guy.. thanks, Captain Obvious. Given the fact that I am not a fucking idiot, yeah, I searched. Apparently I did not find what I was looking for, hence my question. Any other useless answers?

Love smart ass posters..

ncdrawl: I suggest you take a different tone for your third post if you wish to continue posting here.

DocBeard: The existence of Panels UI is hardly controversial. It exists, and lacks several notable functions in the current release of foobar2000.

There are several Columns UI configurations that are written about here on the forums. They look nice (though my preference is for the Default UI). They do not seem particularly difficult to set up, and some semblance of support is offered through the forums.

My suggestion is that if you want a skinned player, you should look elsewhere. foobar2000 has never been about skins, and all that functionality is relegated to third-party components.
