If you're looking for a definitive value to use for "n", only your equipment and ears can tell you that for sure. My personal recommendation (which may or may not be right for you) would be to give -V3 a try. This should give you transparent results almost all of the time with most genres of music on average to good playback equipment.

Your best bet is probably to experiment with different values from -V5 up to -V2 really. Nobody but yourself can give you a definite answer on this one though.

What is a good setting for converting my music to vbr lame?

I use V-4.  The sound is transparent to me.  I personally can't tell any difference on music whether it is is encoded in V-4 or V-3.  You have to test it out yourself.
