Volume vs Dynamic Range

Hi

My rig is: f2k -> ASIO output plugin-> Terratec Aureon Space 7.1 ->Philips SHP895 headphones.
I read somewhere that lowering volume in a player narrrows the dynamic range. So should I set volume in f2k to max? If so, what are the optimal MASTER and FRONT slider settings for my soundcard? I mean,  which of them to set to (max?) and which of them to use for volume control? The WAVE slider is not working for me because I use ASIO.
