HD Spin Down...

Is there a way to force an external drive to spin down?  I have an enclosure with a power switch and I'd like to keep the drive turned off until I need it.  However, I noticed that even when I "eject" the disk via the "Safely Remove Hardware" function the disk keeps spinning.  I'm afraid that switrching the drive off while it is still spinning might be bad for the drive.  I'd love to be able to make sure the drive head is parked before I turn the drive off.

Thanks in advance for your help!

You can safely turn it off; all modern drives automatically pull the heads to the landing zone when the power is removed.

Yep, gone are the days where a powercut meant a trashed HD!

Turn off write caching and you can kill the power any time you wish.

Where is this option?

Also, does it matter if the drive is stored in the horizontal or vertical position?  Is one easier on the drive?

Drive should be stored (while using) in horizontal, "normal" position. Using it in different position causes to degrade lifetime (use google to find mo info...).
