Is there a way to make winamp not display the bitrate change? I realy don't like that (otherwise winamps great).

You choice of lame --alt-preset 160 is still way better than most of the MP3s out there on the net. More than your equipment, it's training to hear artifacts that makes them noticeable (even with cheap headphones).

For Winamp version 2.xx: Ctrl-P, Plug-ins, Nullsoft MPEG Audio Decoder [in_mp3.dll]
Configure: Decoder/Misc Options/ Show average bitrate on VBR files

I think most other players show the average or only show the bitrate of the first frame.
