InterVideo announces DVD-Audio support for WinDVD5

For the record, you still will not get Advanced Resolution (24/96) audio unless you have an Audigy 2.  Creative has exclusive rights from the DVD Forum on this, and apparently they have something embedded in the hardware to allow this.  InterVideo's new add-on pack will automatically detect if you have an A2 and play the DVD-A in 24/96.  With all other sound cards it will allow you to play the MLP-encoded tracks at 16/44 in stereo or 5.1 surround.  Yes, the MLP tracks, not the DD/DTS tracks that usually play when you put it in a DVD-Video player.  So at least non-A2 owners can get lossless 5.1 music from their DVD-As, even if it's not 24/96.  That's some progress.

Oh, and of course, digital output is disabled when a DVD-A disc is inserted.

Digital output is disabled?  That's just great.  The only 5.1 I get is digital (Live! 5.1 with DTT3500... which can only support 4 channel analog).

DVD-Audio = crippleware

Can't get digital output
Can't rip
Can't play full resolution on non Audigy2 soundcard

Saw some DVD-A in the store last week - the jewel cases are about 3cm taller than a CD jewel box (which I don't understand, especially given that the disc itself is the same size as CD), so we can add:

Can't store it in a rack that holds CDs

But wait, there's more:
More expensive than CD
Can't play in conventional CD player

What a missed opportunity for a potentially exciting new format.  I wonder if these factors will be fixed in the future or if DVD-A will just fade away.  Or maybe none of these things bother other people - maybe its just me.  Must just be me.
Was that a 1 or a 0?

I totally agree with your points.
IMHO, the format will only benefit the industry itself, and those "capped" features are ridiculous.
I completely ignore the format and I'm telling my friends to do the same.
The industry is using new tecnologies like a machine gun, to shoot dead their own costumers.
What about the infamous MacroVision, did they forgot to include it??
