What does it mean?
It is a term used when testing the difference (if any) between two audio samples. The two samples are labeled A and B respectively. An X (unknown) sample is presented to the listener, which is a copy of the A or B sample. The goal of the listener is to determine the origin of the X sample.

I worked for a major soft drink company before I retired.  We used this method of comparison to determine if a product had a (sometimes subtle) different taste than the normal product.  It was called a "triangle taste test".  The company had a fanatic commitment to product quality, including taste.

This may be a dumb question, but since the subject of ABX was introduced....

What is the purpose of the Y sample in Foobar's ABX comparator?

ABX is a drug popular among HA culture that reduces one's ability to share their opinion.

It means you need to stop asking questions and start using the wiki and or the "search function". What is this the twelve thread you have opened in the past month or so?

That's pretty interesting. I heard it was mostly used for sensory techniques like in psychology, etc.

It's a nerdy acronym designed to divide those who have a life & those who don't

I don't consider it that "nerdy". I find it to be very useful when I am having a discussion with a bunch of people who think they can or can't tell the difference.

Trying to get a bit-perfect rip or the perfect drive for ripping (now that's nerdy not to mention anal).

Actually ABX is an antidote to the nuisance of useless or misleading 'opinions' in discussions about audio.

After spending enough time on typical audio forums, one realizes how nice it is to have such a nuisance-free zone on the Interwebs.

I understand that the triangle test is pretty commonly used in the higher end of the food industry.

I found out about it in a standard text about subjective testing for the food industry. The author had been the brewmaster for a well-known brewery.

I about fell off my chair when I frst read about the triangle test - there was something very much like my ABX test, but apparently completely independently developed.

ABX and triangle are actually a bit different, although they both involve using three samples.

In a triangle test, three samples are presented and the tester is asked to determine which one is the "odd man out," or different from the other two

In an ABX test (also called a duo-trio test in balanced reference mode, if Arny is referring to the same book I'm consulting), one of the samples is presented as the reference, a second sample is presented as a product under test (or a codec in our world), and a third sample ("X") is presented for the tester to decide whether it's the reference or the codec.

A third type of test involving three samples is ABC/HR (also called duo-trio in constant reference mode).  Two samples are presented ("A" and "B"), one of which is the reference and the other which is the codec, but the tester doesn't know which is which (the reference is hidden, "HR").  A third sample ("C") is presented for the tester to decide if it's the same as "A" or the same as "B".

In both the triangle test and the ABX test, three samples are presented, two are the same, and one is different.

The difference in presentation is how the samples are labelled.

The other difference is the question that is asked of the listener.

In ABX, we've experimented with asking a number of different questions. One of them was essentially the "odd man out" question.

At times, we've provided listeners with a list of possible questions to ask. If answered correctly, they all have the same outcome.
