Gambit:

Were those coloured discs you bought (i.e., discs each with a different coloured write surface)? just for comparison, this is the ATIP for coloured 16x Verbatim's, also in slim cases IIRC, submitted by Frank_Bicking:

ATIP:              97m 26s 66f
Disc Manufacturer: CMC Magnetics Corp.
Reflective layer:  Dye (Short strategy; e.g. Phthalocyanine)
Media type:        CD-Recordable
Recording Speeds:  min. unknown - max. unknown
nominal Capacity:  702.83MB (79m 59s 74f / LBA: 359849)

PS: I wish those tabs worked...

does't help.

Edit: Sorry, I'm tired... edited out that bit that was contradictory in itself.

I have always bought Memorex "Black" CD-Rs, and my burner is only 8x.  They worked well for a really long time, but recently a couple of my oldest ones (a year or more from burn) have started skipping at the end of the CD.  I was wondering why it was doing that.

What is the consensus on "black" CD-Rs?

Memorex Black (unknown manufacturer code) gave me much errors with EAC in audio. HiSpace black behaved better (MPO), no errors in audio, but still some errors in CDSpeed with data. HiSpace gold give me no errors nor in audio-EAC, nor in data-CdSpeed.

I bought a pack of black Memorex CD-Rs some months ago.  I recommend to stay away from black because the DVD-ROM drive (Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-C2302) on my laptop would not recognize them at all!

I think those Memorex Black are just Bad CDRs. HiSpace Carbon are better, and what about black TDK ?

EAC used to return a wrong writing strategy reading the ATIP. It was 0.9prebeta11, I think.
I've just tested beta 4, and it returns the right writing strategy... but is unable to return the manufacturer ("unknown" instead of MPO according to CDRidentifier and to the CDR sleeve).

I tried with a TDK relfex ultra 24x and EAC (beta 4) returned the data correctly, manufacturer included.
BTW, what about such cdrs? I read that TDk uses third parties, some of which  not exactly well famed...

Yes, but it's shown in the ATIP, exept maybe for those CMC plants that they bought, I don't know.

Pio, Volcano:
Sorry I didn't post sooner, I've been busy lately...

Anyway, they were neither metal azo nor coloured. Here is the info:

Verbatim DataLife Slim 24x 700MB Extra Protection Surface

This Disc is designed for CD-RW/COMBO Drive Only.
Disc Type, Material = CD-R, Phthalocyanine
            ATIP Lead-in = 97m 26s 66f
      Norminal Capacity = 702.83MB (79m 59s 74f)
Disc Manufacturer maybe = CMC,Imation
  SMART-BURN Speed Limit = 40X

Notice they are reported as Imation, must be something wrong with SmartBurn...

I had to burn some CDs over the weekend with non critical data, so I made a few tests with them. Here are the results:

I have burnt an overall of 9 CDs, tested 4 of them in Nero CD Speed Scandisk.
The used writer was: LITE-ON LTR-40125S ZS0N.
The drive used to read the CDs was: BTC DVD-16X OEM316B

At 8x:
(CD size - time it took to burn the CD)
707MB (used overburning) - 10:58

At 12x:
701MB - 07:11

At 16x:
669MB - 05:18
697MB - 05:30
Nero CD Speed reports 100% Good

At 20x:
693MB - 05:01

At 24X:
698MB - 04:00
693MB - 03:54
Nero CD Speed reports 99.89% Good, 0.11% Damaged, 0.00% Unreadable

At 32x:
695MB - 03:20
Nero CD Speed reports 99.16% Good, 0.74% Damaged, 0.11% Unreadable
(reading slowed down at the end)

At 40x:
688MB - 03:08
Nero CD Speed reports 98.19% Good, 1.70% Damaged, 0.11% Unreadable
(reading slowed down at the end)

It was possible to copy all CDs to the HD. As noticed, while copying the CDs burnt at 32x and 40x slowed down at the end of the CD. I think it would be impossible to create a 100% perfect copy of an audio CD burn't at 32x or 40x, because audio CDs don't have the error protection data CDs have.

What this little test shows, is (IMHO):
The time difference between 32x and 40x is almost nonexistent.
The time diference between 40x(or 32x) and 24x is very small, but the 40x and 32x burned CDs have unreadable errors.
I think considering burning speed and quality of the burned CD, the highest reccomended writing speed is 24x. At least with this media and writer.
For those who want to be extra secure (and have an extra minute of time:-) 16x is just the perfect writing speed. 100% at a reasonable time (05:30 ain't that long, especially when I remember how I used to burn CDs at 2x on my first burner).

Uff, that's it.

When talking about black CDR, i used the Intenso black a lot with Audio.
My TEAC 12x seemed to like them. The few i burned with my newer burner
show no problems so far.

Interesting!

I bought Maxell 48x,

According to this site they should be TY (everything matches: packing, name, EAN code...) :
Vendor:  Maxell
