Interaural Time Delay and Intensity Stereo

Can we detect any distortion to the interaural time delay if Intensity Stereo is used?

Well, in theory - ITD is important at low-frequency region (say - up to 1.5 kHz) while IS operates in higher freq range where ILD is much more important - so, theoretically - ITD information which is lost by IS won't be very significant from the perceptual point of view. Also, TNS tool would help reducing this problem a bit since it would shape the temporal structure of the frame to match the original more accurately.

However, if the spectrum of the L and R channels differ too much (as in the applause clip used in AES papers covering IS in MP3) there might be some big problems with IS, probably related to ITD mismatch - this paper covers the idea how to minimize the problems with linear predictive coding in frequency domain (TNS):

However, the mechanism of IS and TNS interaction is not yet 100% described and understood if I got everything right )
