Hrm... no comments on MP4 support

Can someone check it out (Rip a CD to AAC), just to be sure?

Neh.. ripped to .aac - right click on the file and it gives you the option to convert it to MP4.

Same as with 5.0

Oh well - i guess this was a rushed bugfix release.. maybe they ment 5.1 - not 5.01

Are you kidding??  The ripping and encoding functions of Winamp Pro are sure to be inferior to EAC and CDex (both free) on the ripping side and LAME and Psytel or FAAC (maybe, but if not then certainly Quicktime and Nero) on the encoding side.  So why would one buy Winamp Pro?  The only function that MAY be better than any free program is the AAC encoder, but why not pay for an AAC encoder thats sure to be better and use all the other free stuff instead of Winamp Pro?

if I start wa5, then ca 2 times out of 10 (not a fixed number, happens randomly), some part of the gui disapeared. eiter the playlist editor or the main window
at least this bug is gone here with 5.01, though strange enough it's not mentioned in the changelog, or am I blind?
edit: damn, it's still there...

Not sure about the status of .MP4 support, I'll ask.  But 5.01 did come out quicker then expected due to a couple major bugs.

Yes, please do ask about native .MP4/.M4A playback support in Winamp. That will make everyone around here happy (or at least many people happy)

Does anyone find it funny that you have to pay money to encode with LAME in WinAmp... and it won't even let you use the --alt-presets?

um, i use eac to rip my music - i didnt even know winamp could rip from CDs...

i said winamp "owned" because i must have used that program more than any other: it is still the best audio player out there, and i felt it deserved my money. previously, there was no way for me to show my support for the program - until now...

Im getting some crazy temp readings when playing audio with winamp 5.  I played an mp3 file for 10 minutes with winamp and the cpu temp shot up to 45C from 31C.  I then played the same file in foobar2000 0.76 and the temp only got up to 35C ???  (Yes, I had to wait a few minutes for the temps to return to 31C before starting the same test in foobar2000)

Ambient temp = 20C.

I as well noticed 'full load hot' temps running winamp on a friend's system.  Odd since task manager does not show much CPU usage. Not that task manager is to be trusted.

An anonymous guy released modified version of in_mpg123 ot56.
With this version, the ML issue seems to be fixed. You can download it here. (includes the sources)

You mean like all of us who registered Winamp way back when it was shareware and yet now get no Pro discount?

Winamp 5's nice. It's prettier than Foobar (that's not hard to pull off), but otherwise, Foobar's still my choice. The two greatest downers for Winamp are the lack of a real Replaygain system, and the lack of APEv2 tag reading. Since I use Foobar so much, I've really come to rely on both of those. I think it'd be nice if Nullsoft concentrated a wee bit more on useful things and a bit less on flash and dazzle. But I guess that's why we have Foobar in the first place   .

Tag reading AFAICT is handled by the input plugin rather than winamp itself.  Updating flac to the most recent distribution package that included the frontend, encoder, decoder and winamp plugin allowed winamp to read flac tags in the media library as well as in the playlist.  APE files still don't work in the ML as far as I've seen with any of the released winamp plugins.  MPC works fine with the latest recommended plugin.  I read a comment either here or in the APE forums that it was due to new API's for the ML that at the time were unreleased for passing tags to the ML (back after winamp3 came out with the first iteration of the ML), but seem to have been missed by the APE developers.

Anybody else know if the Monkeys have gotten on the ball and released a new winamp plugin that correctly passes tags to the ML?  This was actually a big reason for me to switch to FLAC since I've abandoned playlists and am now exclusively using the ML.

Tnx for mirroring this file, harashin. great that one made the plugin ml-compatible.

but to have to do the tagging from windows is still an issue.

It seems to be primarily the main window visualization that is so inefficient in the modern skin.  I shaved about 20% load off my 1.3GHz Athlon by switching from spectrum analyzer or ociliscope to the off setting.  Something the winamp devs should go back and look at.  Winamp 2.91 and all the previous 2.x versions typically ran at 1% or less playing back MPC with spectrum analyzer set to fire, with thin bands and a 70fps refresh.  Jumping up to 30-20% with it on seems rather ridiculous, especially since nothing except winamp itself has changed, I'm still using all my old plugins for MPC and FLAC playback.

G

[edit]  Oops, I confused mine with my 700Mhz PIII system.  My 1.3 starts at 20-30% on flac then drops to an average of 10% after a few seconds, probably more work as it fills up the playback buffer.  Turning off visualization drops it to an average of about 1% with spikes of 6% every 5 seconds or so.

hmmm, I am running an athlon xp 2500

with the spectrum analyzer on, the cpu usage jumped from to 0 to 2 and sometimes 5 percent randomly.

I disabled the little beat and spectrum analyzers, and now winamp stays at zero

this is in the winxp task manager...

nifty.  I never really watched them anyways.

Look, are there any additional ripper plugins?
The quality (and possibilities) of the included AAC encode are, at least, not sufficient. Do you know where to get more?
And did they open an API to write such plugins?

Uh, is it me or is Winamp5 missing a key option that I love from Winamp2 (and maybe 3)? I think in WA2 it was called "single-click playlist buttons (old-school)." This altered the way the playlist buttons worked; instead of clicking on "add" and then being given the option of DIR and URL, it simply defaulted to assuming FILE and you had to hold the mouse click to use DIR or URL. To me, this is really the only smart way of doing this as DIR and URL should used far less often than FILE. Either way, I'm pretty disappointed that this option is now gone.
