Decrease AC3 volume by about 50%?

I know very little about this format but is there any chance to decrease the overall volume in such a file without having to decode and to re-encode it (assuming one has an encoder)? I'm planning to use an AC3-file I ripped from a DVD for my own DVD as a menu background sound but it's volume is far too loud...

this is 'how to'-
change dialnorm in the bsi (to -6db) on the headers of all ac3 frames in the extracted stream.

one of the BeSplit's versions (0.9b1 maybe?) had offered this feature..
this isn't offered anymore.
