Noob looking for a guide to ripping to FLAC with XLD...

Hey everybody, I'm looking to rip my CD Collection to FLAC (once hopefully). I've got a MacBook Pro and as far as surfing around it seems like FLAC and XLD are the best Codec and Ripping programs out there at the moment for Macs...

Anyway I'm a complete novice at ripping CDs with a sophisticated program and was wondering if anyone knows a website / guide / or thread that can teach me how to make the MOST accurate rips with XLD to FLAC...

Thanks for your help!

Hi Brian.Audio. Not official, but this XLD tutorial might be useful for you: http://jungle.sk/XLD_Tutorial/

Note that the developer (tmkk) is known to release new versions with updates and/or bug fixes almost daily, therefore the content will be a bit old, but very useful.

In any case, the settings in the CD Rip preference are the key to getting a perfect rip with XLD (although the default settings already works). Recommended settings for secure ripping are:

wkmax this is hugely helpful, thanks. I have a couple of questions that are going to sound stupid but that's because my only experience ripping cd's before was iTunes default settings...

What is "Read sample offset correction value" ?

What is "Replay Gain" ?

What is / how does a "Cue Sheet" work ?

Is there somewhere I can read up on the basic terminology of advanced CD ripping ?

Thanks again!

Try looking for information in the guide linked above or XLD's documentation. If not, try searching: specific to Hydrogenaudio, search past topics or the Knowledgebase; beyond here, see if you can find anything on Google or Wikipedia. I'm not being terse for its own sake, but I suspect that you will be able to learn much by yourself, and in doing so probably understand and retain the new knowledge more effectively than if someone simply spoon-fed it to you.

No problem, visit the following links:

What is "Replay Gain" ?:

Have you created a log file and looked at it? In general they are fairly simple and self-explanatory.

Failing that, have you taken dv1989's advice and done some basic research? Asking for specific help about something in the log file that you don't understand is fine, but asking other people to spoon-feed you basic research is, frankly, lazy - especially after wkmax did most of the work for you.
