You're right; VC does not expand wildcards by default.

You need to put "setargv.obj" in the list of libraries to link against if you want your wildcards expanded.

IIRC, it doesn't handle filenames with spaces in them properly. I noticed some problem with it in the early versions of VorbisGain (then called ReplayGain), but I'm not quite sure what it was...

Well it does under win2k, but maybe not with other win versions.

Just out of curiosity, I encoded a wav at -q6 and Winamp with in_vorbis 1.2.9 reports "Nominal bitrate: 212kbps" instead of 192kbps. Oh well, no harm...

This is intentional - bitrates will tend to be a bit higher for a given quality level.

I updated the Windows .exe to oggenc 2.2, rehuff functionality and wildcards should work now.

Note that rehuff is very buggy, it will cause severe distortions in some files (though only at the lower bitrate levels seemingly, so if you use -q5 or higher it's probably safe).

This might be a stupid question? But why have the nominal bitrates been changed?

Because at a given quality level, GT3 will generate larger files.

ok
Will this be the case in the final version as well? Are you hoping to bring the bitrates into line with vorbis 1.0?

Yes. Actually, ideally I'd want to correct the quality levels, so -q5 with GT3 corresponds roughly with -q5 of 1.0 in quality, but GT3 does it at a lower nominal bitrate.

Garf, have got any idea as to how much development is left?
I mean, when can we expect a final version?

"When it's ready!!!", I hear u say...

P.S. What is oggenc 2.2? I thought there was only one ogg encoder
(other than the GT tuned versions), v1.0...

oggenc2.1 was created to provide for the input of any lossless encoded files directly into oggenc, providing you have the required command line decoders in the path.

oggenc2.2 added the ability to pad the comment headers for the subsequent addition of tags without having to rewrite the whole file and, also added the option of a second 're-huff' pass. The re-huff stuff is still experimental but basically offers a little extra compression without quality loss.

The 'normal' versions of these are available at Mirror 1.

Think end of february. I'm still in exams - I made this to set my mind a little. After they're done, I'll have more.

awesome tweaks garf!

is monty going to check this and apply to the vorbis development?!
would be a shame if this doesnt go to the next vorbis version. (whenever that is)

I assume so.

I just had a good idea how to improve preecho even more AND reduce bitrate. Will take some studying of Vorbis libs to get it to work though.

Hello!

I haven't tested your encoder yet (I will do it tomorrow),
and because I don't see the source, just I would like to know one thing:
What was your base VorbisLib source? The Vorbis 1.0 or the current CVS?
Because the CVS has some modifications in the noise masking...
(it seems to be better, just the tone has changed (incorrect), because
the encoding tables are not tuned/recalculated and I hope you can do this...)

best regards
Attila

I used 1.0 because I wanted to start from a stable source. But I'll look at the changes, maybe something relevant is there.

If it breaks on your music, post here and explain what's wrong, and provide samples.  I need feedback to know what to focus on when the next tuning round starts (still aiming for ending of february).

I've found a sample - I've got no webspace/homepage, so in order to provide it I could email it to you, if you want.
What's wrong? There's noise (hardly audible while listening to the song from beginning to end, only if I focuson it), probably supposed to be part of a synthesized violin. Encoding changes "noise colour" (don't know how to describe better), maybe the position where noise is located in stereo image, too. At low -q levels (5,6) the noise is also louder than in original.
I've been able to ABX q6 and q8, both 1.0 and gt3b1. Problem improves with rising q level, gt3b1 better than 1.0 (abxable). I haven't started ABXing -q 10 seriously but I think it's possible when I have no more headache (I hope I'm no victim of vorbis fatigue  - probably I just haven't drunk enough coffee today).

Is the special character in tag problem solved with oggenc 2.2 or garf tuned version? That bug is driving me mad

Nothing's changed in that department, I'm afraid.

Ok. Lossless with FLAC preferred, but must be under 2Megs or it'll bounce. My email is in my signature.

Hmm, there's a patch though in case any developer wants to correct the version. I think it should be a very non-intrusive patch.

Give me a while and I'll post some compiles with the patch included.
