--vbr-new regression

Ok, I got curious about the performance of --vbr-new. Obviously, Guru prefers it, but I wanted to see (hear) for myself. I'm doing a test, and I plan to post the complete results when I'm finished, but I wanted to post some early observations.

For me, --vbr-new is not really a clear improvement. While it does perform better on some samples, it does also perform worse on some. I'm not finished with my test yet, but here's one sample that performs worse with --vbr-new. The midnightvoyage sample.

I tested it with -V 6, simply because with higher settings it gets really difficult to ABX most samples.

I will try to finish my test and post the complete results soon.

Edit: Of course, a new LAME version had to come out just now... I will have to retest, but right now I'm so drunk I couldn't even ABX fatboy at 64kbps, so it will have to wait till tomorow.

Remark: I haven't compared --vbr-new and default vbr mode with -V6

Well, it's what I noticed too

Too bad that you're coming 6 months after the alpha period listening test
Wavpack Hybrid: one encoder for all scenarios
WavPack -c4.5hx6 (44100Hz & 48000Hz) ≈ 390 kbps + correction file
WavPack -c4hx6 (96000Hz) ≈ 768 kbps + correction file
WavPack -h (SACD & DSD) ≈ 2400 kbps at 2.8224 MHz

My momma always says that "it's never too late".

And you know, we only have so much free time, and I'm busy with other things.
