Folks,

Want to use 10^-27 as a signature (which is the SI prefix Xenno) w/o the carat and the -27 superscripted. Other than using an image, HTML looks like the only way to do it (or is it?). I don't know HTML - anybody lend a hand?

>>it wouldn't be this, would it?
10-27

Thanks - Xenno

I haven't played around with HTML sigs, but it would go like this

Code: [Select]
10-27

Another thing to consider is what HTML tags are actually allowed.  This would not work unless the SUP tag is allowed.
Every passing minute is another chance to turn it all around.

Thanks - I'll try it

Looks like my guess was basically right except for the brackets

Xenno

edit> no dice  . I think they are supposed to be brackets.

I tried [HTML]10-27[HTML], then updated. In what looks to be the signature preview area it wasn't formatted...just the same ugly string

... You may use BB Code if available and in some cases, pure HTML (if the board administrator allows it).

Some boards, and PostNuke for example, allow partial html support. So people can use only some basic html language, but not more. If fully allowed, a user can use malicious HTML code and compromise the security of a site.

That has to be why its probably disabled on this forum!

Bummer  . Thanks to all for input. Looks like I'll have to use an image.

Jenny,
Did you figure out the transparent background thing? It looks like it, or is it just the same color as the forum?

yes I cheated, Its the same color as the forum

I did try creating a transparent .png image but the file size was to big.  I'm not to sure if .gif files support transparency.

From MicroGrafx. Near PhotoShop (Adobe) in functionality and tools. Also have KPT PowerTools as plugin for it. I'm running an old version (V7), it's up to V10 or 11 by now. You can download a 30 day fully functional trial version (V10). I edited my last post. Could u look at it again (in case you haven't).

Yes GIF files do support transparency.
They're ideal for line art, logos, and illustrations with type.
(My avatar is an example)
Most graphic artists still use GIF because PNG files
aren't supported on older browsers.
(and allot of bulliten boards don't support PNG yet)
That's really the only disadvantage to the PNG format.
So to be sure everyone can view the image, they use GIF.
As time goes on, and older browsers become extinct,
the PNG format will get more use with images, because of its transparency support,
and a more advanced lossless compression scheme than GIF.

PNG has superior transperacy support as well.

Learn all you want at the official PNG Homepage.

About older browsers.. I don't know, whoever uses a browser that doesn't support PNG is using a very old browser, which is a very stupid thing to do. All modern browsers support PNG.

Papa,

So outside your triangle and it's shadow.....Is that transparent or is it the same color as the forum? FYI: Media Jukebox's Interact forum uses alternating colors (white/blue) for it's posts so I am very interested in the transparency issue.

The triangle and the shadow are on a transparent background.
That way, no matter what color the forum background is,
the image will remain the same.

OK - so is a certain RGB (color) value considered transparent, or did you define that color TO BE transparent. Long & short off it.... what program did you use to create it? Enlighten me, brother.

I use Adobe Photoshop 7.0.
The triangle and shadow were placed on a transparent layer.
Transparent layers have no color value at all, because there's nothing there.

What you are thinking about, with specifying a color for transparency,
is called background matting. (supported by GIF, PNG, and JPEG)
This is where you fill or blend transparent pixels with a matte color,
that matches the background where you'll place the image.
The problem with matting is, if the color of the background changes,
the transparency matte on your image won't.
It remains the same as the values you gave it.

Groovy

I don't know if PictPub supports transparent layers, but I'll find out. Since animated GIF's are a series of stills - transparent layers should work for them as well (Jenny - are you listening?).

Thanks pops
