Convert into a lower bitrate while synchronizing

I am using EAC with WMA Lossless right now for 'archiving' purpose.
I understand I can import the WMA into iTunes. Now using iTunes, I want to sync with my iPOD, but I have way more than 40GB worth of music. is there a way for iTunes to sync with the iPOD and 'down' convert the lossless files into a more 'portable' format?

So for example, music on my HDD is in Lossless format. Then when I sync and copy the music to the iPOD, it converts them to say 320bps MP3 or AAC?

Thank you in advance.
