MPC sounds better than WAV in Winamp

The Winamp EQ must have some serious problems - MusePack files (1.15r alpha, --quality 6 --xlevel) sound better than the original WAVs, especially in bass.  I can't adjust the EQ in Winamp to get it to compare.

This is just general praise for MusePack.. Sorry if this is clutter :)

There's a Winamp EQ-plugin I used awhile ago, I remember it was pay-ware or something, anyone know what it is?

I found the one I used to use, iZotope Ozone

I'll check Shibatch Super Equalizer out too, nice that it's free.  Thanks!

There has to be TOS violation in this somewhere.

Do you have proof?

No need for proof. He said he was using the EQ. The generic EQ in older Winamp versions (the one used for WAV, EG) was of very bad quality. The MPC plugin has it's own EQ, so quality is better.

And I'd still like an admin review just to see if I'm full of ****.

What do you mean? He said he is using the EQ. What more information do you need?

I think doing EQ for codecs that split the audio into its component frequencies (i.e. pretty much all of them) should be easier, since on decode you can just amplify or decrease the frequencies as you're decoding.

To EQ a PCM wav file you'd need to do the whole FFT process on it, and for something that has to be realtime and leave as much CPU free as possible (since music apps are mostly used in the background), it probably sacrifices quality for speed.

Roberto,

What do I mean? Read the title of this thread. Flat out states mpc sounds better than wav.

Why would anything sound better than original source? Regardless of player?

I still don't buy it.

If an EQ plugin is used on one, then it should work on the other as well.

Winamp uses a different equalizer for WAV files than for other formats.

Fine.

Disable the EQ and tell me what you get..

Thread title is still misleading.

>_<

Please read the thread again, from beginning to end.

Then, get informed about how the MPC plugin's built-in (I.E, works only when playing Musepack) EQ works.

So what about the title? He clarifies it well in the body of the post. And explaining it all in the title probably wouldn't even fit and would be a mess.

Edit: bleh. So much nitpicking.

Smells like something here...

Anyway, thread title could have indeed reflected more accurately what was causing differences.

EDIT:

And in general should have went in another section of forum altogether.

Not really, considering the member that posted this thread himself wasn't sure what was going on, and whose was the fault.

Point 1:

OK. So now we go off topic? Leave the political views somewhere else. I do not care what yours are. Or the rest of HA's members.

Point 2:

Could have been kindly instructed to post, or move post, into software players forum. It is, afterall, a shortcoming of that player.

Jud: Have you heard a difference between the files now since you are using Shibatch's EQ? You can disable the EQ in the MusePack plug-in... then you can compare the outputs from Shibatch's EQ from the original and the MPC encoded format.

@MachineHead: That was really pandantic... yes its a little misleading but if you were serious in believing it I am sure you would of clicked it to view what was inside and checking it out before running off and saying OMG MPC beats WAV (ripped from the original source just to make sure its not the transcoded WAV). He did say it was from an EQ process did he not... lets just leave it at that.
