BPG (HEVC subset) image compression

Personal quick test (8bpc)

Personal quick test2, with the idea of near-transparency (10bpc, 4:4:4, using script to reduce quant if $max filesize is reached)

Some reading;
BPG (Better Portable Graphics) is a new image format. Its purpose is to replace the JPEG image format when quality or file size is an issue.

It's not going to replace anything being patented to hell and back.

Results are pretty impressive (Althought not ready for prime-time), so I do hope you have something more to say on the subject  (not patent related).

No, I'm completely and utterly disinterested.

I, for one, find this fascinating. Thanks for sharing. I'm not certain what kind of meaningful discussion can come out of it though!

Has anyone got numbers on the "acceptance" of webp?
"I hear it when I see it."

Facebook tried webp.
IE since 9 and Win7/8 support JPEG XR out of the box yet can't get any acceptance.

@lamedude, xooyoozoo has posted a comparision page (including JPEG XR and webp);
http://xooyoozoo.github.io/yolo-octo-bugfixes
(imho nothing comes close to BPG possibilities or with other words: Nothing was good enough to get any acceptance till now, again imho.)

I tend to agree with Garf. Being based on heavily patented format BGP has zero perspective as potential JPEG replacement, despite of being efficient from technical point of view.

BGP may have some perspectives when (or if ?) some patent-free project like Daala will reach at least beta stage and replace WebP as "underlying layer". Until then - not a chance.

/me completely disinterested with such stances.
