MP3-Replaygain standard? how close?

How close are we to having a MP3-Replaygain standard?

just i'm think of creating my own little solution for now storing the values in the id3 comments field, i don't ever use it for anything else. does anyone acutally use the comments feild?

Yes, some people actually use the comments field.
The three main ideas that have come forth are:

ID3v2 tags

ID3 "Lyrics" tag

LAME Xing header

There are pros and cons to each of these plans, and no one seems to be able to agree on the best solution.
Myself, I'm starting to lean towards the ID3v2 solution, but with an option for the LAME header for people who despise tags.

I'm planning on coding this into mp3gain within a week or two.

what format are you planning to use in the field? i might as well use the same as you.

what i'm planning to do is modify the replaygain dsp plug (http://www.xs4all.nl/~walterln/replaygain) so that it writes and reads its calulations from the IDv2 tag if its there, idv1 if not. i was just gonna wirte it like in vorbis, but with comma seperation (eg RG_PEAK=1.45, RG_RADIO=-4.56). and i'll make it calculate only mp3s.

thats my plan, what d'ya think?

I suggested a possible ID3v2 solution at the very start, but no one picked up on it - probably due to the hatred of ID3v2 in the groups that I read. Anyway, the original suggestion is here:

Cheers,

P.S. - Sorry I didn't respond to your original question, but I couldn't answer it.
If only ID3v2 tags didn't cause problems with so many (poor) decoders, I wouldn't hessitate.
The ideal tagging system (generally) would be ID3v2 at the END of files, but that's not likely to happen.
So for now, go with ID3v2.
