dts transcoding

I regularly rip dvds to ogms (xvid latest unstable + Ogg post CVS because the lowbitrate is tuned a bit more than it is at the GT3b1). Now I tested the difference between the Dolby Digital 5.1 and the dts stream. On the DVD "Tanguy" the dts stream was much more roomfilling than the DD. I read that DD is AC3 with data rates of 384 or 448kbps and dts uses half the compression of ac (1/4) and uses 768 or 1536kbps. AC3 has audible artifacts, which I can't hear because it is difficult to hear a difference when there is no original file to abx with. Due to the higher bitrate (--> less artifacts) dts is (or should be) the first choice for transcoding to other codecs choosing low bitrates.

Coming to my questions:
  • What kind of compression or which codec is used for dts?
  • Is there a possibility to transcode it to any other lossless format (for further transcoding to Ogg Vorbis)
thanks for answers

Yes, you can now transcode dts http://hypercube.is.dreaming.org/ it uses the intervideo directshow filter and some other filters that one of the people at doom9.org got to work do a search to find them.  Here is the link to the forum thread http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&t...&threadid=51986 I really don't know what format dts is in, it is very very closed standard so it is hard to get information.  As for transcoding to another format, I wouldn't suggest ogg vorbis, I have not had good experience with multichannel ogg vorbis the best tool for making multichannel ogg vorbis is headac3he but really it doesn't work well you are better off making it to an ac3 than ogg vorbis since proper channel coupling has never been implemented in ogg vorbis, IIRC.  Probably your best bet is aac.

The theatre version of dts uses aptx100 audio data compression.  This is different from the codec that's used on dvds, which uses a psychoacoustic codec developed by dts.  You can probably find more information about it at dts.com.

Just kind of curious, but does anyone know anything about aptx100?  For the theatre version of dts, it gives a 4:1 compression at 760 kps, and I don't think it's a psychoacoustic codec.  I'm assuming it's not very good, or else they would still use it for the dvd version of dts.

thanks Bonzi and lakemonster!

I do not use ogg multichannel because it is as you wrote not (yet!!) tuned for it: no multichannelcoupling. When I want surround I take a DVD and use the optical Bypass of my Audigy 2 Platinum. So my receiver can decode the dts or dd stream. I have not tried the analogue multichannel yet because I am lacking of cables. I've only got one cinch cable left... .

By the way, I muxed an AC3 file with a Xvid using VirtualDub mod. Sadly, Power DVD cannot open ogms. I usually use it because it allows me to Bypass the AC3 or dts stream directly to my amp. Now as I do not always want to insert DVDs in my drive and I make high qualitiy rips for my harddisk I need a player which supports ogms and bypassing the undecoded audiostream.

The Core Media Player , aka TCMP, get it from http://www.corecoded.com ... last version coming with MPC and Monkey support, soon AAC in MP4 ....

@Chris

Nothing against the player, but unfortunately that abbrev reminds me of "TCPA", which creates baaaad feelings....

@Christian

thanks, but you forgot to mention its Ogg support! Or maybe it has nowaday become standard to replay vorbis files?? That'd be veeeeery nice!! Maybe another step forward to hardware vorbis players?

btw. I hope the freeware version of TCMP supports the feature I demanded.

I am not able to download the dts transcoding tool at hypercube...  They want me to use flashget oder any download manager but it doesn't work with flashget 1.4 and getright 5.0.

What can I do, or can someone mirror that file please?

There was also another tool released today that does more or less the same thing as hypercube does, it is commandline though which is nice.  Here is the forum thread, http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&t...&threadid=53173 and of course you should be able to find a link to download in the download section .

Am I to take it from the smiley in that last post that this tool is not considered legit (due to dts liscensing terms) and so we cannot post links here, or ask for it to be hosted on Rarewares since this would be a very useful download? It is linked to on the frontpage of doom9.net though, (azidts).

It is legit. It doesn't includes the DTS decoding routines, it's just using the InterVideo DS filter in a smart way.

If you don't have the filter, the program simply won't decode DTS.

If anybody should be interested to test, i can provide you ( via email ) with the latest versions of the TCMP audio plugins for

AAC 2.0
AAC 5.1
MP4 AAC
Ogg Vorbis
FLAC
APE ( Monkey )
AC3
MPC

Just drop me an email to chris at matroska dot org and download TCMP RC3 matroska edition from http://www.corecoded.com before.

@fragtal : TCMP is DShow based, so it will be able to play Ogg Vorbis in any case of Tobias' DShpw filters from http://tobias.everwicked.com is installed. In addition to that they have the nice audio plugin based on CCAS now also, made by DeXT, so even without this filter you may play Ogg Vorbis audio tracks ( NOT OGM movies ) ....

Hmmm, yes azidts is very good and legal...I think  I wonder how easily zmAn could make it work with PowerDVD etc

Makes me want to put a DTS-> 6 channel AIFF -> Nero AAC transcode and then decode it. But I cant....So I think ill go full circle, and write a AAC DShow filter with FAAD2.

Unless shitowax beats me to it:

Yes, I figured you could find it fairly easy, and I was too lazy to post the direct link, didn't have anything to do with whether it was legal or not.  Nic, I am very happy that you are going to look into writing an aac directshow filter based on faad2, this is something I have been waiting for, for quite some time.  Glad to see that you are interested in this as well.  Of course I will glady help with testing once it is ready if you like.

You can't post direct link anyway, since Doom9 has anti-leech systems. (like HA, actually)

@nic: Maybe you can add FAAD2 support to valex' AC3filter? First because it would be great to use the advanced tools of AC3filter (equalizer, mixer, synchronization...), second that it would be cool to have "a codec to decode them all", pretty much like ffdshow.

(the filter would have to be renamed, of course)

Thanks for your efforts.

Roberto.
