Sources for the last 'regular' Fhg encoder

I need CBR MP3s for my Golf VI and wanted to try how the Fhg encoder compares to the latest LAME, where the most effort has been spent on VBR improvements. Sadly all the download links seem to have vanished. AFAIK the latest version was the mp3 surround capable Fhg encoder version 1.5. Nowadays, the all4mp3 site only provides the mp3hd encoder, for which I have no use. Can anyone provide me  a link or the CLI encoder itself via PM (win32 or 64)?

Or is there maybe an undocumented switch for the mp3hd encoder to output regular mp3 files?

Try http://www.mp3surround.com  They have some download links there.

I spoke too soon.  The links are there, but they don't go anywhere useful anymore.

I have searched the net for literally 3 hours now and reached my wit's end. Can't find it anywhere in the huge Google index, nor on archive.org, nor even on private warez sites. All links point to all4mp3.com or mp3surround.com, i.e. nowhere. In the backmost corner of the internet I have found an old Radium codec pack including both 1.5 encoders, but torrent only and with all seeders long gone.

Hydrogenaudio, you are my last resort.

PS Thanks for looking, anyway, 2814-6890.

mp3hd is a regular mp3 with correction data in a huge id3 tag.  I think if you strip the tags the resulting file should be a normal mp3.  Worth a shot anyway.

Thank you for this suggestion. That would probably be doable, though much ado for bulk usage.

What's the problem with VBR mp3s? Mine plays them without any problems, the only files it doesn't play are free format ones.

The "RNS 310" cannot display remaining track time for VBR files. I'm also about to test whether it improves searching.

Hmm, I'm going to ask the MP3 team whether that behavior is intended or not.

That thread was the reason that I looked for LAME alternatives in the first place...  It had raised the impression that the standard CBR mode didn't receive too much care for a while.

After some hours of testing yesterday, I have decided against using the Fhg encoder, anyway. I could not find any tracks, where the Fhg encoder actually beat LAME. Either were both transparent (>99%), or both failed, or LAME had a slight edge. It was nice to be able to undertake these tests myself, thanks to the provided encoder.

I chose LAME's standard CBR mode instead of halb27's parameter list, because the number of available cases, where it actually produces an verifiable improvement, can be called anecdotical at best. AFAIK, it hasn't really seen broad testing, so it could as well cause worse results for other tracks not yet known. At least one advantage of CBR 320, if you have to use it, is its simplicity. halb27's method adds the complexity of VBR encoding successfully for some tracks, but maybe not for others. For a lack of a better answer I have chosen the standard option.

I find that CBR 224 ~ 256 kbps converges with high quality VBR and that 320k is not needed. This is true even in old encoders not using alt-presets . So if max compatibility or pure simplicity is desired , high bitrate cbr has its niche. I actually like the predictability and simplicity of high bitrate CBR - lame , WV lossy..  Even though ATM i use lame VBR I've issue with some players and If i did abx test from the start and stuck with -b224 -h things would have been HQ back then and now. I don't care these days for being outdated - just what works.

For VBR i prefer MPC -standard / nero bitrates: 160~190k and lame -V3 does a pretty good job most of the time and is most compatible. I agree about VBR being best choice for 128 ~ 192 encodings. At higher bitrate its a matter of taste and you can be a cbr man with no shame.

Just noticed that the command-line encoders are being listed under www.all4mp3.com/tools/command-line-tools.php again. Unfortunately, the links are still wrong  but maybe someone who knows e.g. the correct .exe file name can figure out a working link until this is fixed.

I've found a working exe file from the MediaCoder directory, the file size doesn't match with the ones from the official site, though...

Am I allowed to upload it?
