Best Receiver and Speakers Under $5,000

I currently have a Sony STR-DE495 5.1 Channels Receiver with the 5 sony speakers and sub that came with it. I'm starting to notice the drop in quality so it's time for an upgrade. I want a really good receiver and speakers for under $5000. I only have a small room for it to go in, 3.5m x 4m roughly. I'm not sure how much I will need to spend to get a awesome system so $5000 is a good start. I love music more than a car so I would prefer to spend good money on top range audio equipment as opposed to a car.

All my music is MP3 V0 since I can't really make much difference between that and FLAC with my current system. I would prefer smaller speakers for surround as that what my setup is at the moment. If I was to get floor standing speaker they may not fit but I could possibly make room. Thanks for the help in advance.

Keep the reciever and spend the $5,000 dollars on better loudspeakers.

I would keep the receiver and check out Guru QM10. It is a full-range stand mounted speaker and should cost less than $3000, I believe. It is designed to stand close to a back wall, preferably with some damping of the early reflections from the wall behind and between the speakers. With the acoustic support from the wall it goes down to 30 Hz, despite its small size (WxDxH is 12x10x9.5 inches, the enclosure volume being 10 liters).

It might be what you're looking for.

I am in love with ADAM tweeters (I know them from A7, that is, ~$500/speaker range) and I'd definitely look into something from this company. Probably $3k- $4k on speakers, $1-$2 on room treatment, and keep the old receiver.
Ceterum censeo, there should be an "%is_stop_after_current%".

That would be a good choice, certainly.  One of PSB's larger systems would be excellent too, speaking from a Canadian viewpoint.

Or one of the appropriately priced designs from the group owned by Harmon might be exellent choices.  So long as you buy from a company that uses decent engineering to produce competent designs and steer clear of many of the alleged "high end" companies (but not all) you should be fine.  There's a few good British companies making excellent speakers around your price point as well.

But when it comes right down to it I would defer to Arnie's preferences if I were you.

I would highly recomend an audition of the Vandersteen home theater system.

You can upgrade from the 1C speakers to the 2Ce and stay within your budget.

Thanks heaps for the responces guys. Those Paradigm Studio Monitors and other speakers mentioned look to be awesome. Only think is I'm trying to figure out how to change my room around so they will fit. How long will the high end speakers last with normal use and full blast use every now and again. Should I buy a pre amp for my receiver to get the most out of high end speaker? Cheers

Speakers can have a virtually unlimited life under normal operating conditions. Abuse or obsolescence are the most common causes of end-of-life for speakers. The only common exceptions are certain speakers that have foam surrounds that get brittle and crack after maybe a decade or two depending on environmental condidtions. Not all foam surrounds suffer from this problem, but many do.

As far as the room goes, you can get some practical adivice about room treatments from the RealTraps web site.  The weakest link in most systems with loudspeakers is the room. Most rooms affect the sound of the speakers in them so profoundly that the sound of the system in that room will be less changed by changing the speakers, than it will be by potting it into a different room.

Arny raises an excellent point and given the dimensions of your room the point is even more substantial. If you check out RealTraps website you will notice that a room that has been properly treated is no longer your typical domestic multi-purpose room. If you really want excellent sound in a space that is 3.5m X 4.0m you should consider room treatment, and making the room a dedicated listening room. If not then be prepared to do extensive home auditions of various speaker systems because the choice will be as much room dependent as speaker dependent.

All apologies to Steve Sullivan in advance for this unprovoked personal attack on Arny.
