Best Lame Version to encode CBR files ? V3.98.2 or 3.90.3

I'v got a very old DAP recently, since it dosen't support VBR well, so I decie to encode some files into CBR files

I've read posts here and I found different views:

For 3.90.2/.3, if you use --alt-preset insane (not -b 320, which is not tuned), the difference versus 3.98 -b 320 will exists in several types of artifacts that have been improved during these years ( could search sandpaper noise in these forums). Other than that, there shouldn't be much differences.

On the downside there is some evidence that 3.98's CBR/ABR mode falls a bit behind. Looks like development focus was on VBR. Maybe though this is not specific to 3.98.

So I'm really confused about which lame version and what switchs to use ?

Thank you !!!!

P.S. If same question has been asked before, show me please.

At that quality level, aptly named "insane", it'll be almost impossible to notice, try ABXing yourself and you'll agree, me I can't already from V3 and seldom with V4 on my DAP.

The sandpaper noise problem is an issue pretty specific to Lame version 3.97.

Other than that I personally would use latest Lame, though 3.90.3 sure is great as well when using CBR 320.
It will be hard to find samples where differences are audible. If you want to find out about differences yourself you can try with
music containing castanets, harpsichord, or electronic music with sharp impulses.

Thank you DARcode & halb27
I don't think I need ABX CBR 320 caused I've listened CBR192 with both 2 lame versions, NO differences for me.

However I just want to know if there are any differences between those LAMEs when encoding CBR files.
