The "ff" was just in order to distinguish a 1964 (started at) label from the 1964 (released) album. More to highlight for the sake of the posting that there is one Decca directory with many albums.

Why not just the "Decca"? For chronology of eras. I realize I chose a selection with, by coincidence, labels "D" before "R" before "V" ... That was unintentional, for Sinatra, it would have been
1946ff Columbia\
before
1954ff Capitol\
before
1961ff Reprise\

Well I said it earlier but it was a few posts ago...
Column 1: Artist names alphabetically
Column 2: The folders for each artist when selected in column 1
Column 3: The albums in whatever folder is selected in column 2

Then somewhere else on the screen...
- a detailed 'playing now' with the album tracks and info on the currently playing track. Big album artwork.
- being able to look through that column database seeing artwork. For some reason all programs seem to let you see the current album's artwork or the ones in your database but if you check out the database, you lose the current track list and artwork. JRiver is the only one (that I'm now using) that has a separate tab altogether to see 'playing now' and your collection.
- The ability to listen to another song or album instantly (double-click) without having to populate a playlist. Foobar is constantly creating playlists out of what I choose to listen to which ends up being this massive playlist that then launches when I least want it to from the beginning. I think I just don't know how to use "Default" and "Library Selection"

This software display folder structure too and you can play it. It is free. Unfortunately it is not possible choose an external audio player. You must play with built-in audio player.

Other option is  add possibility to context menu in explorer "send to foobar".

Hmm, I always took great care of tagging my files, which took (and takes) hours on end, at times.

The fs looks like this:

Music/<Artist>/<Album>/<Artist> - <Title>.ext

I know that I have redundancies like that, but it makes moving files easier. I don't use the album directories on mobile devices, for instance.
The FS like this makes things easier to traverse with zsh and tab completion, which I use when moving files with rsync, or quickly playing a track with mplayer. I use Rhythmbox or VLC otherwise, which cope well with tagged files.

Movies on the other hand get all thrown into one directory:

Movies/<title> (<year>).ext

the year in parentheses is optional, sometimes I'll put it in there, sometimes I won't. I tag movie files as well.

I'm gonna have to look up a lot of things to understand your reply.  I have no idea what fs, zsh, rsync, or tab completion are.
