Is flacattack outdate?

I want to ultimately rip my CD's into Flac files to have stored on my pc losslessly, yet at the same time be able to put them on an mp3 player as high quality mp3's, with alt preset fast extreme.  Is flacattack outdated in doing this?  What is the recommended process (for an average user)?  Mareo, React?  I also will be downloading music from the internet and would like to be able to organize those files with my ripped CD files.  Is there a guide that can walk me through it?

I don't have a guide, but: I would suggest to use foobar2000 for everything. If you want to go extra secure, you could use EAC for the ripping stip, but everything after that (organisation, tagging, transcoding FLAC->MP3) can be done very comfortabely with foobar. You will have to download LAME and FLAC seperately as foobar uses their executables to do converting and ripping. This has the advantage that you have full control which encoder version you use.

Just a recommandation concerning your LAME settings (extreme): try ABXing also lower bitrate MP3s (HA wiki entry for LAME . You will be suprised how much more music you will be able to transport without loosing transparency against the original FLACs.

Thanks for the reply.  I will look into Foobar.  So, are you saying I could skip EAC altogether and do the original ripping to Flac using Foobar?

I would agree with ojdo that you should use foobar2000, with one disagreement: foobar2000 includes a secure ripper. So you can go all the way with fb2k and just rip straight to FLAC, and then convert your FLAC files to mp3 from there.

Lame "alt-preset fast extreme" is now known simply at V0.
Progression: alt-presets became just "preset" and then the -V settings. The "fast" setting became known as -vbr-new and eventually became the default and so therefore does not need to be specified.

As ojdo says, V0 is very likely overkill unless you have great hearing - try some double-blind tests.
I might understand keeping an overkill encoding setting, except that you're archiving in FLAC anyway so you don't need to think of your mp3's as "archive" quality, just quality enough that you can't tell the difference.
God kills a kitten every time you encode with CBR 320

You are probably right, maybe I don't need to go V0.  I have a huge CD collection and am a tad concerned about finding an mp3 player that can actually transport all of it, as well as sustain a decent battery life.  However, with that said, I have been disappointed with the sound quality of the mp3's I've ripped using Windows Media Player and iTunes.  Through my BOSE or high end headphones I can sure tell stuff is missing.  I'll have to find a happy-medium.

Extremely sorry about the endless quotes.  I'm new, was a bit confused about the reply options.  This any better?
