Enhance converter performance over NAS connection?

I have my media library stored on a NAS on the local network.  My primary PC runs WinXP with a dual-core Opteron.  Are there some tweaks in FB2K that will enhance audio file conversions (e.g. FLAC -> MP3) over the network?  Just to be clear, the audio files are on the NAS, and FB2K is on the PC.  The NAS is Linux-based and is useless for anything other than file-serving (ReadyNAS NV+).  Network settings are already optimized.

Thanks in advance,

eCo

better cables, connectors and switches.
1GbLAN instead of 100Mb
NFS instead of SMB if possible

Thanks for the input.  I'm at 1 Gb already, and the hardware's happy.

However, NFS is supported in the NAS but not enabled.  What's the most elegant approach for adding NFS support in WinXP?  I did some digging around and found the MS add-on called "Windows Support for Unix" or SFU.  It looks like a PITA from here.  On the other hand, 3rd party apps are expensive as hell.

Assuming I get this running, what sort of performance boost can I expect?  Or asked another way, will it have been worth the hassle?
