VBR Question

I have just started using the EAC program to rip my CD collection and I love the program, I read several tutorials and FAQ's and got it working quite qucikly.

My settings are for 256kbps VBR which I think is a good balance between quality and file size, I saw a guide say the generally accepted standard for good mp3's was between 192-256 variable, so I went for the upper end of that.

During LAME encoding I noticed a few songs encoding at 190kbps up to 200kbps and just wanted to know from more knowledgable people if that is normal?

Does VBR set a minimum and maximum level for variance during encoding? if I set it to 256kbps is there an absolute highest and lowest it will go or is it normal to see this amount of variation from one song to the next?

I am only posting this as I looked through the website FAQ but couldn't find an answer on this.

Thanks!

My settings are for 256kbps VBR...
With LAME VBR, you don't set the exact bitrate, you set a quality level (V0= best, V10 = worst) and then LAME analyses the audio and chooses an appropriate moment-to-moment bitrate depending on the complexity of the sound.

In addition, you can constrain the VBR bitrate and can optionally set the minimum & maximum bitrates.

So, yes the actual bitrate will vary from moment- to-moment and from song-to-song, etc... VBR means Variable Bit Rate.

Rather than improve quality, using Lame VBR with a minimum bitrate will do little more than bloat your files.

I have now realised that I was confused with my chosen settings, I didn't realise that the drop down menu for bit rates in EAC compression options does not relate to the command line once the VBR code is entered and that the drop in the encoding rate I noticed was just the norm for the -V2 setting I had entered and I was in fact encoding to a lower rate than I originally thought.

Love the program but it is difficult to understand.

Thanks for the responses and the links.
