Coated headphone wires, need help splicing them.

Hello, I'm not sure if this is the correct section for posting this; there isn't a section specifically for audio hardware.

The problem I am having is that my headphones broke, and when I opened the outer cable to fix it, there are these yellow, red, and green colored wires. They almost look like they are coated with something. When I try to twist the cables together, it won't work. I am wondering if anyone is familar with a way to splice these types of cables together. It would be much appreciated.

It's even mentioned in a sticky at the top of the General Audio forum...

the coating is there to isolate the individual copper wires. You have to melt it away to get a working joint. This is normally done with a soldering iron. You hold the wires onto a cardboard and move the iron on top of the wire. There's also special soldering liquid available to help you in that process. You then add some solder and join the wires.

If you don't have a soldering iron, you can _TRY_ to burn away the coating with a lighter... but be warned, that probably only works for thicker copper wires because it will burn away the thin ones completely.

Good luck!

OMG! Thanks! It worked!      I can't believe I didn't think to try using a cigarette lighter. Oh, and sorry for posting in the wrong forum. I'll be more careful next time.
