I always thought XP(WDM) is doing Wave mixing by itself.

Actually no, that's what I was wondering.
Strange though, native XP drivers should work.
Do you use directsound output in your programs? Maybe you use WaveOut. But even that should not be a problem with WDM drivers (XP native ones are WDM).
Strange problem you have there. I had no such issues with my good old AWE32.
Maybe someone else has some solution for you.

Hm... this thing used to happen to me. But in XP it won't just share the audio. If I am playing foobar2000, I can't use other audio-based programs like Skype for example (Error: Problem opening device...). I get the same error opening Winamp and then trying to play a song in Foobar2000.

The driver is listed as:

Creative AudioPCI (ES1370), SB PCI 64/128 (WDM)
Driver 5.1.2535.0

Bourne,

I'm using the exact same soundcard and drivers. Funny, I thought I was the only one still using such an archaic piece of hardware.

Could it be that you're using Kernel streaming in winamp and FB2K? If I turn on Kernel streaming in those programs I also get the "Problem opening device" error when I try to use multiple audio programs at once. Try using Directsound instead (in Winamp: Ctrl-P -> Plug-ins -> Output -> select "Nullsoft DirectSound Output", in FB2K:  Ctrl-P -> Playback -> Output -> Select Output Device "DS: Creative Sound Blaster PCI" from the drop-down list.

Hope this helps, at least on my machine it works so your soundcard and drivers should not be the problem.

I want to send Realtek straight to hell...

I want to help you.  Integrated audio controllers can be useful just as PC speaker is. But then again PC speaker does not need 16 Megabyte driver loaded. The six realtek outputs just take up space where some additional USB ports could better go.

The SB128 used an Ensoniq chip which was quite powerful, infact better then the later SB Live quality wise- in my opinion.

The six realtek outputs just take up space where some additional USB ports could better go.

More USB? An average motherboard with Realtek HD on it already has around 10 USB ports (or more). Why more?

Personally I don't have problems with my Realtek HD (889a), the only two things I can compare it to is my older ac97 and SB Live 5.1, both which were quite horrible compared to my current onboard audio.
