Just finished my listening test with my standard bad samples harp40_1, herding_calls, trumpet, and eig as well as lead-voice which I found added a tremolo effect with prior 3.98 alphas.

-V2:
trumpet, harp40_1: slightly annoying to me
herding_calls, eig, lead-voice: annoying to me. The tremolo artefact in lead-voice in second 0.0...1.1  is still there, though I think it has improved in comparison to 3.98a7.

-V1:
trumpet, harp40_1: very slightly annoying to me
herding_calls, eig, lead-voice: annoying to me

-V0:
trumpet: not annoying to me
harp40_1: very slightly annoying to me
eig: slightly annoying to me
herding_calls, lead-voice: annoying to me

--alt-preset 250 (125 in the case of lead-voice):
trumpet, lead-voice: not annoying to me
harp40_1: very slightly annoying to me
herding_calls, eig: slightly annoying to me

Maybe I'm a bit trained to abxing right now cause I did a lot of abxing in the last days in order to find out what wavPack setting to use in the future.
Anyway I think overall quality with respect to these samples has decreased.
lead-voice has improved, but the tremolo effect is still audible.

robert, can you tell a bit about 3.98 development? Especially: what's wrong with lead-voice?

LAME's second psy model--aka NSPsy--uses too many short blocks at wrong places.

May I ask how far we are from a beta?
Used the search function but couldn't find anything on it.

There is no specific time frame, but I would like to have 3.98 stable out before march 07.
