QuickTime might not support HE-AAC decoding. (If you're encoding at low bitrates)

Or you're imagining things.

Quicktime playing LC is sounding worst at my end too.  It has a strong phasey sound to it.  Strangely it is only with audio only mp4.  When I mux it with video it plays fine.  Might be a bug in QT.

No QT phasey, flangey sound in iTunes, either.  Must be a QT bug.

Wow.  I was just about to post that.  How odd eh?  It seems there is some kind of QT bug with mp4 only encoded files.  Odd indeed.

v7.1 here, only LC part of HE MP4 files seems to be decoded here.

Old versions had some kind of "high quality" option that you had to turn on. Can't find it in the latest version.

quicktime cannot face the aac+. so if u load the files on ur ipod the quality is terrible.

nevertheless i´m using aac+ as it means a massive reduction filesizes. i comment all files that user are strongly recommended to use winamp instead of quicktime.

very curious why apple still doesn´t support aac+. so just use winamp guys, it´s definitely the better way of listening. sorry for all ipod users who have to listen to that shit quality then as apple cannot decode aac+.

maybe someday they realize the problem and will include aac+ into quicktime. so many users who have that problem.

They do realize the problem, there was a bug report filed about it a while back ago. I know this because i was talking to my friend who works for Apple and asked him to inquier or just dig a lil. He said that the bug report was filed like 1 yr ago. Im not exacty sure and i cant find the log of that conversation, but needless to say they know about it, but for some reason are not doing anything about it.

I encounted this problem with crappy Quicktime, early this year when I was trying out AAC encoders and the only AAC files encoded in iTunes sounded good on Quicktime and the the other AAC files that was encoded on a non-Apple encoded sounded like a Blade encoded MP3 and they sounded great on Winamp and foobar2000. This most be a bug in Quicktime.

If the file is HE AAC, Quicktime will decode it at lower quality because it only supports LC AAC. That's not a bug, it's a missing feature.

Nope all the AAC files I tested on Quicktime were in LC AAC. I am sure it is a bug that Apple can not be bothered to fix just like the LAME VBR skipping on the iPod Mini and the Nano.

Just tested latest quicktime 7.1 with latest Nero command line encoded AAC LC (neroAacEnc.exe -q 0.45 -ignorelength -if - -of %d).

Is a Quicktime bug.  The phasing sound is so strong that it sweeps through the entire frequency range.  Sounds near identical to a phaser guitar pedal.

Plays fine in iTunes.  Strangely, in Quicktime, the phasing occurs in audio only mp4. When I mux the same audio with video it plays fine in QT.  It has NOTHING to do with HE AAC.  HE AAC doesn't sound like it's going through a phaser when played in a LC player.  HE AAC just sounds like the sample rate has been reduced.

I just came here to report the same problem! I am going to post a message to the Quicktime mail lists about it.. seems like it's definitely a bug in the player or something.

Just a follow up-- I got in contact with an engineer at Apple and sent an example AAC. They're checking into the problem and will be fixing it hopefully soon. Whee!

Well, Coding Technologies and Nero AG have actively supported the AACplus and High Efficiency AAC respectively for a long time now. Apple has their own AAC implementation and of course wont use any other implementation as that means they will have to license it from either Coding Technologies or Nero AG.
And by not supporting the newer specs they just show how arrogant they are. I have never liked Apple and I will never do. Creative produces just as good portable audio players and I was not surprised when I heard about the lawsuit that Creative filed because of Apple stealing technology. I'm sure they did that with the Xerox graphical user interface and at this point Apple is no better than Microsoft.

The faster people start buying from companies who follow the official specs the faster the bad guys realise they are screwing up things for themselves. I know this seems simple minded, but at least it's working for me.
