How to find out which verson of WMA that has been used?

Hi,

How do I find out exactly which version of Windows Media Audio codec that has been used for a file? I have tried to look at the properties, advanced properties, the properties in WMP 11, but it just says that it's a wma file and the bitrate. I want to find the version. Help pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated.

There's an attribute called "WMFSDKVersion" that will tell you what version of th Windows Media Format was used to encode the file.  It's not the same as the version of WMP, but it should be easy to find out which versions are which.

The screenshot corresponds to Winamp's "File Information" (ALT + 3) window.
Wavpack Hybrid: one encoder for all scenarios
WavPack -c4.5hx6 (44100Hz & 48000Hz) ≈ 390 kbps + correction file
WavPack -c4hx6 (96000Hz) ≈ 768 kbps + correction file
WavPack -h (SACD & DSD) ≈ 2400 kbps at 2.8224 MHz

I see small WinAmp logo..
Oh I really love WinAmp when I can see bit rate up and down all the time when play WMA-VBR (foobar can't detect bitrate in realtime)

Hi, WMP will only show the version after you've started the playback of the corresponding file.

I wouldn't go by what that says.  I can encode in wma v2 and it will still say in the file that it is v9.

There could be other reasons for this, but untill I find out more, I certainly won't trust it.

Edit: Nevermind.. I just checked and it turns out v2 doesn't even store the sdk version tag at all (I thought it did).  Mp3infp even IDs it as DivX ;-) audio instead of ie. 64kbps cbr.

If you have installed anything that uses WMA v9 then even encoding v2 is encoding v9 (Microsoft update the core encoder), that is how any program can encode WMA v9.2 without specifically knowing about it.

(using the DMC wma encoders by the way) but when encoded with version 2, there is no lowpass, and the reported bitrate is slightly different (higher IIRC) than with wma9 (slightly lower bitrate and a ~12.5khz lowpass at 64kbps).  Considering the differences.. I can't help but wonder if the same encoder library really is being used for both. (I am under the impression that it is the case for v7,8,9,&10 though).
