Audio Player as a Windows Service?

Rather than have to run up an interactive logon and launch an application, I would like to have a media player run as a Windows Service and process a playlist, directing out to a local audio card.  I would be decoding MP3s. An interactive application to control the service would be nice.

Any information would be appreciated (couldn't find anything via search).

I don't know of any i'm afraid. I'd love the foobar core to be a service and available to other apps, but it doesn't seem they're going that way.

If you consider Linux then there are a couple, including Music Player Daemon (my favourite)

Slimserver is worth a look too it can be run as a service.  www.slimdevices.com  It's cross platform.

http://www.iopus.com/guides/srvany.htm - turns anything into a service.

I use this for several applications on my server, since I only log in once in a blue moon, but nothing audio/video related. I'm sure if you ran the program with the correct commandline args to start it playing some playlist, and set it up beforehand to output just the way you wanted, it would work fine though.

Maybe it'd even work with a remote control, but I d'no.

My thanks to all of you for replying.

I have used SRVANY several times, and it may do the trick if I can find a well enough behaving application.  I will also try SlimServer.  I will report back how well I get on.
