Decompression Problem

I have used Monkey's Audio for a long time now.
Much to my content. Last week I wanted to convert some .ape-files -> MP3
Guess what? I could not add the ape-files to the mac-window.
Even from the main-menu/add files/ within MAC.

Yes Í have chosen the option "decompress" or "convert" before I start 2 add files.

Can someone teel me whats going on?

decode the ape files to wav again and then wav to mp3

Actually, if you are trying to compress from APE files to MP3, then you must:

- first change the mode from "Compress" to "Convert" (large button, upper-left corner)
- change mode (normal/high/extra-high) to "External > LAME > Configure"
- enter LAME prarmeters (see below or use "Recommended LAME settings" in this forum)
- make sure LAME.EXE is in the sub-directory called 'External' where Monkey's Audio is installed (e.g. C:\Program Files\Monkey's Audio\External)
- change mode to "External > LAME > Lame"

LAME settings (for LAME versions 3.96 and higher):
-b 128   Use this for industry standard 128kbps MP3's
-V 5     Good quality VBR for portables
-V 2     For high quality VBR


Whew!

P.S. Try Foobar2000 instead

Yes, If you read My openingpost carefully, you will 've read that I
did
change the option to convert or decompress, before I try to add the apefiles.
The mac-list just wont except the apefiles!

what's wrong?

Hmm  Just tried it here and it works with "Convert"

Did you try getting the latest version of Monkey's Audio (version 3.99)?

Are the APE files able to pass "Verify" scan?

Because I encountered this problem, I installed the latest version 3.99
Still the same problem.
The apefiles cannot be added to the monkeyaudio-filelist :|
Therefore I cannot even veify them!

Why?

Has this something to do with incompatibilities of past Mac-versions ?

When I drag-n-drop a apefile to MAC it says:

Runtime error '52':
Bad filename or 'number

What in the hell is this?

I don't think so, it worked when I tried it with 3.89b

The Monkey's Audio program is VB6 based, so something must be going wrong between the programming language and your OS (such as some VB6 libs got corrupted). If this is true, you might try uninstalling Monkey's Audio and re-installing it, then the VB6 libs will be restored. Although if some error comes up during the reinstallation about how the installer is trying to overwrite system files with older versions you should abort and report what it says here.

This is a little out of my league, but please post your system specs also and someone else might be able to figure out the problem.

please tell me exactly which spec I must post.
I do not know anything about specs etc and what to look for.
How do I know if MAC is installing older versions of VB6 libs on my xp?

Okay, Windows XP home or XP pro? Any Service pack installed?

Most important:
-Motherboard manufacturer and chipset

And if you can:
-BIOS version
-RAM (how much, what kind)

edit: oops, you will get a pop-up message from Windows XP if something attempts to overwrite newer system files with older ones.

no pop-ups encountered when installing, i guess (i would have noticed)
only a warning message with de-installation of mac 395 saying some
"system.ocx" or something will be deinstalled cause nobody is using it anymore,
but I had problems with mac before I de-installed it. So it couldnt be that?

windows xp pro, 5.1.2600 sp2 build 2600
via 694 epox 8kha+ mptherboard
511,48 physical memory
award bios

I never had any problem with mac, I could compress to ape, decompress and convert to my hearts content, now this.

Have you read my post stating the error message I get when drign-droppin a apefile onto MAC?

On the Monkey's Audio forum there are other reports of this specific error and apparantly there is no known solution. I bumped up the last post I found on their forum to see if anyone is holding forth on any information

Sorry for the frustration, I'm really going to recommend Foobar2000 to you again, it's more reliable and flexible. Check out the FB2K forum.

The APE-files do play with winamp and the ape-plugin..

As far as I can judge, it only means you might have to use a different program to decompress them. You can use Foobar2000 to do this, like Destroid already said. The problem is with the MAC encoder frontend. Your files are probably ok.

What's more.
If I have the MAC window open and running, I have it maximized now,
I can't seem to resize it (double click titlebar, resize using edges and corners).
If I doubleclick de titlebar it simply minimizes to taskbar.
When I doubleclick it from the taskbar it wont open and display the window.
?

Dude, are you even reading the replies?  You have two problems here : you can't uncompress your MAC files, and you can't listen when people propose solutions!

As a first resort, you would normally use the MAC program to decompress.  It doesn't work.  WHO CARES??  Just use an other program.  Figure it out : you said winamp could read the ape files fine.. Change the winamp output plugin to the diskwriter!  Then, encode the written wave files to mp3 and quit whining...

geez...

Or, as someone else said, use foobar2000.  It will decode and encode into pretty much any audio format.

Or, if you really want to use MAC, try the generic solution : Reformat your hard-drive, reinstall windows, and then decompress after having installed _only_ the software you need.
