Altec Lansing MX5021 (2.1 Speakers)

My shoddy old speakers that cost something like $15 finally died the other day (well, the right one did) and I'm chasing a good 2.1 system. I don't really want 5.1 because I doubt mother-dearest would allow anything that loud into the house and I don't have the money for such a setup at the moment anyway. So, after doing extensive shopping around I came to the conclusion that the Altec Lansing MX5021's would be perfect for my situation. They're THX certified and pump out around 90W in total (and look gorgeous ), but I was just wondering if anyone has any complaints about them before I go spending $AU200-odd on them?

I'm was also looking at the Creative iTrigue L3500's, but they look a little weak (especially when the satellites are only 2 little tweeters!), aren't THX certified and cost around the same as the Altec set. And before anyone goes and recommends the Logitech Z-2300s, I simply hate the design. Period.

Thanks.

I'd buy Klipsch ProMedia 2.1s.

complaints? nope. They can sound a little harsh/sharp sometimes.

I would go with the klipsch as well, you do get more bang for your buck. The new Promedia 2.0's sound awesome.

Either the promedia 2.0's or the 5021's, their in the same ballpark, so you'll have fun with either. You'll just get a cleaner sound/bass out of the klipsch's.

Acoustic-Energy Aego2 is superior to anything Altec Lansing or Klipsch can make for multimedia speakers. Highly rated by hifi audiophile magazines Stereophile, The Absolute Sound, What HiFi etc.

Yeah, for $400. For $400 that had better be one heck of an awesome PC speaker system, because I can get a pair of B3's for $330.

I would go with the Altecs you mentioned. Supposedly they're almost as good as the Klipsch in that they are better in the midrange area, but lacking in the highs a bit. Your call. The Klipsch are cheaper and more likely to please overall, especially in the bass department.

I got mine for $199. I don't know what B3 speakers are you talking about, but you'll have to factor in an amp if they're passive speakers, and that alone costs more.

I'll second that.  I've had a set for 2 years and I'm really happy with them.  It took a while to find a good place for the subwoofer though.  Seems to sound better when it's hidden behind some furniture.  (Your mileage may vary)

I listen to films and a fairly wide range of music.

Hmm, thanks for your replies everyone. I'd previously looked at the Klipsch and they are practically the same price as the Altecs, but the ProMedia 2.1's us Aussies get have these alien like satellites I'm not really keen on (yeah, I'm pretty picky on aesthetics too). So, if there's not really any noticable audio and price difference, I'd rather go for a speaker system that looks good. The Altec system also has a wireless remote, which is a nice plus for me.

I can't even find a store that stocks those here. I swear we're always the last to get good products.

Ugh. Those aren't Promedia 2.1, they're Promedia GMX.
Plastic speaker housings.  Why, klipsch, why? You should know better.

If the Altecs are the same price as the GMX speakers as shown in your photo, go with them for sure. Actually, even if they're a bit more. The GMX speakers are a cheaper line than the standard Promedia set.

The Altecs cost $AU234 whereas the Klipsch's cost $AU219 from the same shop. I'm not really fussed about paying the $20-or-so difference, so I guess I'm set to order the Altec MX5021's then.
