Ogg Vorbis a program?

I like things simple.
I currently have EAC for Ripping,
and hooked up with Monkey Audio for lossless compression.
Nice and simpe, easy to use and set up.

With Monkey Audio I have lame set at alt preset standard, roughly 192 VBR to convert to MP3, when I eventually get (researching now) an MP3 player.  However, at this setting, I woun't get a lot of songs on the player.  I am not using the MP3 player for the gymn, but just to have with me at all times, so I can easily listen to my music at any time besides vehicle without having to carry around CD's, and tired of listening to 13-17 songs from same artist at same time.

I am looking at iRiver iFP-790 which supports Ogg Vorbis?
I've done some research (as much as I can absorb without my head exploding) and it appears that this format and/or program supposedly compresses lossy to a smaller file and with better sound than MP3?

If so what is a simple way to set this up without getting too complicated.  I looked over the pinned post in theis (Ogg Vorbisforum), and followed a few links.

I know Ogg Vorbis is a format, but is it a program, too?  Or is something else used to encode?

Example:  MP3 is not a program - just a format.
and LAME 3.90.3 is one of the best encoders for MP3 format.

I guess I'm asking what is the best encoder for this strange Ogg Vorbis format?

AND can I simply hook it into Monkey Audio?  (To convert my ripped to APE Cds to Ogg Vorbis.)

P.S.  As still a newbie, what is/does WIKI stand for?

If you use alt preset standard, the settings in EAC don't make a difference, and the MP3's have an average bit rate of around 200kbps (but essentially vary between 32 and 320kbps).

Looking at the MAC frontend, it looks like it can convert straight to Ogg, but I think the encoder it uses is a bit outdated (i.e. theres a newer version out that can probably produce higher quality Ogg files)

I don't know much about Monkey's Audio though. I've generally been using FLAC for lossless purposes.

As for WIKI, see this page:

Have a look at Rarewares and get a copy of OggDropXPd from there. With that program you can easily convert your MAC files to the ogg vorbis format.
If you decide to buy the iRiver player, be aware of the fact that it has limitations with respect to the bitrate of the ogg vorbis files. Use the search on this forum to read more. It seems that encoding with -quality 4 is safe.

i believe Monkey's Audio converts .ape to .ogg out of the box (not sure), anyhow. . go to your MAC programs folder and take a look in the "external" folder to make sure you have oggenc.exe and oggdec.exe.

start up Monkey's Audio, go to compression settings/external/ogg (use the configure to enter the desired command line settings)

if thats too complicated you can always use OggDropXPd as Hanky said above (its a no brainer)

Edit: apparently you need to put [a href="http://www.rarewares.org/files/ogg/MACdll.zip]MACDll.dll[/url] in the OggDropXPd folder.
