freedb plug-in problem

I have a problem with masstagger freedb plug-in. It does not get russian characters right, but replaces them with think vertical lines. Is there a way to fix this?
The  greatest  programming  project of all took six days;  on the seventh  day  the  programmer  rested.  We've been trying to debug the !@#$%&* thing ever since. Moral: design before you implement.
