iRiver SlimX imp 550 vs Sony D-Ne9 ?

I am looking at these two top end units that have features I want:

Support .m3u playlists ( I read it in the Sony manual at store)
Have optical outputs.

They are also about the same price in Canada. The Sony is widely available at Retail, the iRiver almost impossible to find.

I am hoping to use it as a portable and hook it up to my Denon Reciever via optical inputs.

I would appreciate hearing anything from anyone who owns eiter of these units.

My concern right now is hearing if anyone used the optical outputs with mp3 files. I have heard that some players with optical outs, only output for regular CD's and not MP3.

Also does anyone know if the iRiver includes the mini->Toslink adapter, the Sony does not.

Isn't Sony D-NE1 the top end?

I didn't say they were THE top end. But they are about equivalent functionality and specs and price.

Would you prefer I said near top end. I am not interested in the most expensive player on the market. Actually I will take the cheapest one that has:

Optical output and .m3u support.

Any comments on the actual units in question?
