Looking for the Spotify hand-off experience but with a local music server

Over the last few years I got used to liking Spotify not to a small degree due to its great hand-off feature:

I can start listening to a song/playlist on my phone and then hand it off to my Mac (running the Spotify app) and then it plays there without further involvement of the phone. So, the  cool thing is both devices are "renderers"/"streamer" and "controlers"!

I use this feature with four devices:
  • iPhone
  • iPad
  • Mac
  • Arcam rPlay with amp and speakers (only renderer)

Now I'm thinking of cancelling my Spotify subscription and going back to my own music collection on my NAS. What software would I need to recreate this experience with local music on a NAS?

MinimServer UPnP on the NAS maybe? But do exist renderers for the Mac to which I can hand over the stream after listening on my phone?

Only a "does not exist, yet" answer for the device-spanning Emby Media Server, as an informal feature request from 2020 confirms. While there is a convenient "continue watch" functionality for movies and long-file audio book content, it does not support music/playlists. Back in 2018, someone requested an automatic device transition between Chromecast and Android phone: https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Emby/issues/3424

So in short: Emby can't do it as of 2022.
