If you're primarily going to be using the headphones in a noisy environment (if your computer has a noisy fan, or you're in a room w/air conditioner running, etc) the Grados are not ideal because they don't block any outside sound, as someone mentioned above.  In this case I would recommend Sennheiser HD280 Pro which are, in my opinion, the best set of sub-$100 closed headphones.

Hey, have you tried driving those HD280 Pro's from a line-level source (like a soundcard or quieter portable player)?  Are they easily drivable?  Thanks...

Edit -- I've been using a set of Denon AH-D550's with 35 ohms impedance... would I notice a drop or an increase in volume with the 64-ohm spec of the HD280's?  It's been awhile since I took an electronics course, but I'm suspecting they'll be even louder than the Denon cans if I remember right -- doesn't higher impedance suggest better "efficiency?"

Edit2 -- even tho I wasn't the one who was asking, appreciate the recommendation on the HD-280 Pros, I think I'm gonna pick myself up a pair & sell off the Grado SR-60's .

The 280's are not all that easy to drive, but they do well with a sound card line-level out (at least, they do well with the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz line-out).
An amp that can handle some amps will definitely make them sound better.

OHM'S LAW
BASE FORMULAS  P=I*E  E=I*R
TO FIND VOLTAGE  E=P/I  E=I*R  E=SQRT(P*R)
TO FIND CURRENT  I=P/E  I=E/R  I=SQRT(P/R)
TO FIND POWER  P=I*E  P=E^2/R  P=I^2*R
TO FIND RESISTANCE  R=E^2/P  R=E/I  R=P/I^2

  Where P = power (Watt), E = voltage (Volts), I = current (amps) and R = impedance/resistance (ohms).

  As [P= E^2 (@ constant)/ low #] >  [P = E^2 (@constant) / high #]

However, the current draw goes up proportionally to the power output with a static voltage. This is why low impedance speakers typically need a high current amp.

[P=I*E(@constant)] With higher power output comes higher current draw.

Well, will give them a try with my Audiophile 24/96 (I could always get an inexpensive something-or-other at Radio Shack, if necessary... these won't be so much for "quality" listening as they will be for cleaning up vinyls recorded to digital, and some light listening also -- which IMHO they seem perfect for, closed cans are a must near this particular PC).

The Denons I have are getting old, and I've repaired them several times -- since the Grados didn't work out, sounds like these might be perfect.  Got a fair deal at Buy.com for $101.46 shipped... dunno where psyco1 found these for $80, maybe I should have asked...

I would recommend the Alessandro Music Series One headphones for $100 USD shipped.  Based on a lot of talk at http://www.head-fi.org, they should sound very good for the money.

Here you go...280's for 50$

http://www4.head-fi.org/forums/showthread....&threadid=40002

Uccck, used headphones... (just a personal dis-preference).

Already bought a pair at Buy.com anyway.

I'm wondering if camote ever found what he (she?) was looking for -- not wanting to "hijack" this thread (I seem to have a tendency to divert off topic, too much impulsiveness when posting).

I like/enjoyed my Denon AH-D550's (closed phones) for years, and they're still available online for about $65 or so... weak point is that they can be quite uncomfortable for long listening periods, but the strong points are (imo) VG sound at that price point, as well as a very long cord that doesn't tend to get tangled.  Decent build quality too.  They probably sound as good as many mid to mid-high range models, and the price reflects general lack of advertising/promotion on Denon's part.

i can buy at 65 €, and Grado SR-60 is at 160 €... (i live in france)
thank you.

IMO 160 Euros is way too much for SR-60s, you can do better for that much money (they're only $60-70 in the US). There's some posts with some info on DT-231s on Head-fi. Maybe you can sort through this seardh of DT-231:

Thank you,ChS!
I have buy beyerdynamic DT 231 and i am very happy.
It is really comfortable and lightweight, sound is excellent.
Music is my first love.

I have Sennheiser HD580 as well. Soundstage is amazing. You will here all sorts of detail that you won't on cheaper kit.

A followup on the Sennheiser HD280 Pro's... received my pair today.

My God, what they say about break-in is all too true.  Out of the box, these things sound like something picked up from a dime store... *zero* bass, sound like a pair of cheap tin cans.  After 15 minutes of breakin (48 hrs recommended), already there's more bass.  Sheesh!

Love the fit (not to tight on my head) and external noise isolation is to die for (at last, the fan noises will be gone).

If camote is still looking, these look like they are in fact excellent (frequency response graph in the manual looks amazingly flat)... except the cord isn't very long.  An extension couldn't cost too much tho.  They are also quite large and bulky, but that feels "intimate" to me...
