--alt-preset standard -Y vs --alt-preset medium

medium gives a smaller file size than -Y generally i think, but wich is better?

Quality wise --alt-preset standard -Y is better.

I'll just try and use simple logic on this one.

if medium gave better quality AND smaller filesize, then -y woulde probaly be removede or not be sugeste at HA....

--edit--
ups jsut forgor that there is more to the Qualtiy/bitrate quation. .. encoding time..
so my simple logicg above has a great flaw. it missing the encodngin speed factor..
just forget what i wrote :-)

i'm using now --alt-preset standard -Z -Y, heum is this a correct preset line??
not much different with regular --alt-preset standard, i mean in average bitrate

greetz

ripped the cd Roxette - greatest hits ( don't bore us - get to the chorus)
average bitrate overall  178 - 197 kbp/s
should i'd better use standard -Y instead of standard -Z -Y

why don't you read the List of recommended LAME settings

Update: -Z removed again; included within --alt-preset standard/extreme with the new 3.90.3 compile.

Can you make out a difference between these settings on your portable device ? If not, use the one that leads to smaller filesizes ... most portable headphones are not able to reveal these differences anyway ...

--aps -Y is higher quality (and size) than preset medium.
