Any difference with optical?

Hi there! I just got an SMSL SD-793II in the mail today. Anyway, when I was initially hooking it up, I was using the optical out from my Asus Xonar Essence STX sound card (Which works perfectly fine with my receiver) but it wouldn't work with the SMSL. I then tried using the optical out from my motherboard, and that worked like a charm, same cable and everything else, just changed from sound card to on board optical. Is there any reason that two optical audio signals would be significantly different from each other? (Literally the only change I made to the cable was to put the little adapter thing on the cable so I could put it in a COAX/Optical RCA jack for the sound card. I took that off for the motherboard optical.)

I thought that all optical signals would have been the same. Was I mistaken, or is there some other reason for this?

Did you set the sample rate of your STX to one that your DAC doesn't support, such as 192k?

Dust on the optics? Those little adapters often come with dust caps for a reason. A blast of compressed air, being careful to hold the can so you don't accidentally squirt liquid, on send and receive ports, front and back of adapter, and front and end of optical cord will ensure all are clean.

Also many fiber optic cords will crack if you bend them too much, perhaps while in storage. The exterior looks intact but the snapped inner core will "work", but only intermirrantly; bend it ever so slightly and the signal is lost.

That must have been it. My sound card was set to 192khz, but the SMSL only goes to 92khz. Thanks!

It couldn't have been this, I don't think. I moved the cable back and forth several times, and my receiver always worked, but the SMSL didn't, so I think the above suggestion was correct.
Thanks though!
