How to get tags from other files?

I am facing a challenge here - have a good amount of mp3-s from older times and now i have them with better quality but no tags (artist, album, date etc.). Is there a method known which would allow to get file information (tags) from other similar files?

you can copy tags between 2 selections of tracks but they must in the exact same order.

uhmm, this was a little bit confusing - was this related to default foobar setup or were there included some special plugins?

i assume there is a foobar setup without any additional plugins. so now i have 2 folders - "new" and "old" - one in low and other in high bitrate (and the low ones has all the tags i want to transfer to the higher bitrate ones). now i load all the old-low-bitrate files and copy information and then load all the same set of higher bitrate files and paste it yeah?

No plugins were specified as being required, and none are.

Yup. Again, just make absolutely sure that the order of tracks in both selections is exactly the same, i.e. that a particular song that appears at the 100th position in the source selection also appears exactly there in the destination selection. For instance, if you sort by filenames, and those are all identical or equivalent (not including a consistent suffix, etc.), corresponding orders are guaranteed.

If that precondition, for some reason, cannot be achieved, there might be more complex solutions such as per-album lookup in freeDB or similar services or perhaps even acoustic fingerprinting. But if the simplest method outlined above is feasible, there is no need to give yourself unnecessary work. Let us know if you have any success with it.

I know this is the fb2k forum, but I use mp3tag (freeware) for this.  Then you need the files in the same order.  Open the mp3's, mark all, Ctrl-c, open the new ones, mark all, Ctrl-v.
